What is its oil capacity?

Hard to believe it only takes 5qts, or is there more hiding elsewhere?

It takes 11. There is actually more oil than coolant in the system.

Hi I'm new here, I was brought to the forum by this thread back in February when I was doing a google search for something (don't remember what) on my R350 and I was fascinated by the AMG version and the story as it unfolded. I've been commiserating with you along the way too, I bought my R in October with minimal research into the model and I bought one with the balance shaft/cam gear problem.

anyway I wanted to say good job so far, and I'm excited to see it running again.

Regardless of whether you leave or replace Guido's name on the nameplate I think you should add the link to this wonderful story.

Gentlemen, it's been emotional. https://www.youtube.com/embed/rywvMb3jqgcI'm not done. It might still be junk. I will count this as a success no matter what.

That, was a nice sound, and pretty anticlimactic. Just the way you want it to go.

Congratulations, sir!

I have two codes. One is for the temperature sensor in the front bumper, the other is for the passenger side intake cam being off time. I'm not out of the woods, but it's surprising how chill I am about the prospect of pulling the valve cover and resetting timing. Not trivial, but not exactly hard.
I brought it to temperature. No leaks that I could see. The air suspension seems to be holding air. More to do.

That's because you're over the hump. You don't see the stuff under the hood as a monolithic block of Here Be Dragons. You've already been in there, know what is involved in dealing with it, and have the confidence borne of experience to dig in there and make it right.

That said, you might try clearing it and running it again, the cam phaser may not have seen oil pressure quickly enough for the computer to be happy. If the control is plugged in and working. (Have done many Mercedes control solenoid/plunger things on the V6s, dunno if the eight uses the same setup)

Isn't the horrendous clatter of a hydraulic lashed, timing chain engine's first start nerve wracking??? Gets me every time... and then a wash of euphoric relief as the tensioners pump up and the HLAs fill with oil one by one...
