I do need to clear the codes. I'm reading them with a scanguage because I left my other code reader with the One Lap Civic (I think) and I don't think it's clearing them when I ask.

In reply to mazdeuce:

You may have to cycle the key before clearing them. Or after.

I haven't yet encountered it with a Mercedes, but on some BMWs, the computer seems to be bicameral and stores codes both in BMW-specific (what a real scantool reads) and generic OBD-II (what inexpensive dongles read). And you have to clear them individually, resetting only one will leave the other set of fault codes in place.

One of those learning experiences that make my forehead taller.

I knew it was going to happen. It was every bit as horrific as I knew it would be. I don't know if you could see my face relax when the noise died down, but it did.

I won't be as excited about the first start of my own project as I was about this one.

This. I think I had more reaction to this than the first start after I built my FD motor.

On my last look, saw your display of fluids. Next look and listen was a sigh of relief. WELL DONE!

I thought I was having a good day, today when I put the carburetor for the fourwheeler back together with a rebuild kit, and it worked. Then I saw the first start video.

That is so awesome! Congrats!

First off, I can't possibly reply to or even properly thank everyone who has followed and contributed and said their kind words to me. This isn't my thread, it belongs to the whole community, and I love all of you for it.
With that out of the way, I was allllllmost able to sleep in this morning, but once my brain turned on, back to the Grosh. I finally cleaned up my tools, threw away one thousand zip loc bags, and just organized. I put the headlights and bumper back on.
And then I torqued the wheels and took it around the block. It works. It's quiet and smooth and smells like I'm burning oil off the exhaust, which I am. Back home and I washed off the accumulated dust from sitting.
I need to finish installing the battery and put in at least the wheel well liners. Mrs. Deuce wants me to make an appointment to have the transmission fluid changed (which it's due for) and have them clear the codes and give it a once over. I think that's a good idea.

Please take it to the dealership that wanted $57K to replace the motor.
