1 2 3 ... 14

After posting about my last challenge car, a desire to do more with my cars, and enjoy my hobbies more, I thought I'd start a thread to track my progress.  I've been getting into the garage and wrenching more which is good.  It's enjoyable, fun and seems productive.

I had two 944s (one N/A and one turbo) before buying my first 911, a 2000 C2.  I bought this car to celebrate the end of child support payments to my ex-wife.  I still see my son as often as his work schedule allows and pay for his medical, dental and will pay for his college if he goes back and passes.  I may take him to my next private welding class to see if he is interested in that.  His interst in cars consists of keeping his Focus on the road, and we do some of that together when needed.  I know if something happens with it, I will get a call immediately.

So here is the 2000 C2.

She has 85K miles, the rare factory M030 sport suspension (US spec of course), full leather, and had the IMS bearing and clutch serviced by the PO.  The BSA wheels are gone and she now wears HRE 547s which I got on sale (they were factory refurbished and the owner decided he wanted a different wheel).  I also have Apex SM10s with sticky tires for other things.

I've owned several NA Miatas and one convertible SN95.  I've also had a Vette with T tops and another with the removable hard top (Porsche would call it a targa top).  I love top down driving.  As a result I decided I needed a Boxster.  Like most of you, I am always trawling the internet looking for my next car (fish).  I found a 2000 Boxster S in a rare  color, speed yellow, and checked it out.  I traded off my last Corvette (a black 91 ZR-1) and drove it home.

Here is the Boxster.

Both photos were snapped in front of the office at work for insurance.  Collector car insurance will save you a small fortune if not using your car as a daily driver.

I've always liked Porsche 944s.  The look is so influenced by Audi and isn't all Porsche.  The 944, particularly in turbo or S2 form has the most angular lines of any Porsche, ever.  Just look at those hard edges.  No other Porsche has them.   These cars just look right.  I was trolling Craigslist and found this rare 944 S2 in Austin.  For those that do not know, the S2 is unique in that it has a 3.0L 16 valve DOHC 4 cylinder.  I had never driven an S2, but the reviews are correct its far more potent and enjoyable than the 2.5L SOHC four of the regular 944.  It's honestly a lot like the turbo until 4500 rpm then it's rev happy, whereas a turbo is YEEHAW at that rpm.  It's almost as quick as the turbos.  This car needs the most work and will likely receive the most modifications of my three, eventually.

Here is the rough looking but complete 944 S2.

Getting engine pics of the 996 or 986, not so good, but a 944 can have enging photos!

In my next post, I will update with what I've done this past two weeks and what I plan to do for each car in the near future.

Nov 2020 update

944S2 is sold and 2002 Subaru RS is aqcuired for rallyX.

This means my fun car world is flat now.

Thanks guys, but I'm going to try and hang onto these for a while and enjoy them.  Speaking of the garage.  Here is this weeks garage photo.

So the Boxster is safe in the parking garage at work.  The 94 Miata has a new blue top installed and will be for sale this spring.  I need the space, and do not need to convertibles.  That was actually priority 1, new top.  My daughter red range rover is behind the Miata... it takes up a lot fo space.  I was working on the top and the Miata will soon be back where the 944 is parked and covered in a Covercraft Noah cover.  The white DSM is the challenge car and needs a head gasket.  This will become priority 1 after a few more niggling Porsche items are corrected.

1st Porsche item I corrected this week was to install wiring for trickle chargers / battery maintainers.  I travel too much for work and don't get to drive cars enough due to parking problems (need to sell Miata and challenge car post challenge), and have battery drains sometimes.  I got tired of breaking out the big charger and topping off batteries, so this seemed like a no brainer.  I have two battery maintainers, but probably need a 3rd.

These were last weeks projects.  I installed the pigtails in the 911 and Boxster and the new Miata top.  The Miata top needs the rain rail torqued.  It's currently closed and taking shape and will be adjusted, torqued and carpet reinstalled.  I get to take all 3 of these cars through the inspection station next weekend and visit the local tax office shortly thereafter.  This is one of the major problems with having so many cars.

This weekend's project was to get the new mufflers installed on the 996.  About 18 months ago before we moved into our new house, I did the catalytic converters.  I had the dreaded dead cat rattle these cars get when the cat separates from the pipe.  I also had the corresponding CEL.  I noticed when doing the cats, that the mufflers had cracks developing.  Technically it shouldn't have passed last year with cracked mufflers, but it did.  The new mufflers are from FVC Brombacher and are actually Dansk mufflers.  The sound, OMG the sound of a free flat six.  It's exotic.  I wonder if an iphone video would give you guys the right idea?  Maybe I can find someone with a go pro to make a video.  The main thing I've taken away from the Miata top and the mufflers is that the money and time I spent on tools and garage organization in the new house was absolutely worth it.  Being able to find every tool you need when you need it is priceless.  I was able to get a punch to remove the rusty bolt that broke on the muffler bracket and correct hammer so easily all in the proper spot in the toolbox.

I thought about replying to the garage / toolbox thread the editors started, but my garage isn't ready for showtime, but it's close.  I may make this a priority because being organized really helps.

The mufflers... old vs. new.

I was so happy I ordered a new hardware pack from FVD for all the bolts and nuts and clamps.  It was totally worth every  penny, and I do not remember how expensive it was.  Anything for a Porsche is just more expensive.

The first muffler in place.  Since I had the day off and I'm old I took a nap after this, and it got dark after dinner with the family.  My garage has extra lighting but having the garage open blocks it and that's no good at night when working at the rear of the garage.  I need to get the garage door raised to the top and with a side drive so I can put in a lift next year.  Being older, you really realize the value of a lift.

The rear bumper fitment on the Porsche is simply amazing.  It's amazing how firm and flush everything is with only a few fasteners.  It really makes all the domestic vehicles I've worked on seem lacking.

Poor lighting here, but you can see the punch and the remains of a busted nut and bolt next to the socket on the ratchet.  The passenger side muffler bracket had a bolt snap off.  It snapped off flush inside the bracket and the bolt head was rusted to the bracket.  It was a bit crusty.  The exhaust hardware did not fare well in CO with the previous owner.  The rest of the car seems super clean though. I whacked it out and was very thankful for the new hardware pack as previously mentioned.

About this time, my number one helper, asked if she could assist.  I was putting the new hardware into the muffler bracket to hang the new muffler.  I had her spin both nuts onto the new bolts for me.

This is actually before dinner after she got home from school, but  it's dark already.  She helped me hang the muffler too.  She actually volunteered to hand me the nuts and held the flashlight for me.  She then handed me the ratchet too, such a great helper.

I put the rear bumper on after dinner and drove the car off the ramps so I could close the garage door for the night.  I was tired of the cold rain all day .  Even though the garage stays dry working at the back I was getting cold drizzle periodically.

I finished up the installation and installed my Ruf exhaust tips this morning.  The Ruf tips were not designed to work with the exhaust bellows on the Dansk mufflers so there is too little clearance.  I need to find a good exhaust shop or other shop with a plasma cutter and have the tips adjusted more to my liking, but here is the finished product.

I really wish you all could hear it.  My test drive was fun.  Above 4,000 rpm when the variable valve timing kicks in ( I don't know the exact rpm but that must be close).... OH MY!   YES!  Flat 6 music is a real thing.

I love your garage.  Wish I could have something set up like that...with the cars I mean.  The yellow Boxster is beautiful, I love the color.  I'm really glad to hear you're getting more time to wrench, and getting your helper involved.  I had a blue '92 Miata that looked very much like yours, and I had the matching factory hardtop.  I loved that car, it was such a joy.

I'll start a thread sooner or later on the project car I have, whatever that is.  wink  It's about to go into hibernation for a few months while I recover from my upcoming surgery.  However, I plan to start back in on it so that my son can take it to his first autox sometime in May or June.

In reply to Klayfish :

2000 was the first year of the Boxster S.  When I found one in speed yellow, I had to get it.  This week I'm swapping the turn signal stalk since it's not centering and releasing to neutral correctly, and I will also install a factory painted console and adjust the shifter cables.

The current interior has a yellow wrap on some parts, but it's not as good or a perfect match to the factory paint.  This car is a bit rough, but I intend to fix all of that.

I also have a full factory Porsche aero kit I need installed and painted.

Okay list for February / March:

1)  Get console installed in Boxster (and adjust shifter while changing consoles)

2)  Get radio code for Boxster and write it down so it is never lost (requires pulling radio to get SN).

3)  Fix rear bumper shocks on 944S2.  You can see the rear bumper is pushed in if you look at the photos closely and it drives me a bit bonkers.

4)  Install motor mounts on 944S2 because the idle to 1800 rpm shudder is driving me bonkers.

5)  Remember to keep the Boxster on the trickle charger all the time!  It also is a good idea to keep the 996 on the trickle charger.  I need to top off the 944 battery every weekend until I have the lift installed and all 3 cars on trickle chargers in the garage.

6)  Install the Hard Dog rollbar in the Miata so I can sell it and get'r gone.

7)  Start on challenge car DSM head gasket.

8)  Find a shop with a plasma cutter to work on and refit the 996 exhaust tips.  The bellows on the Dansk muffler exhaust are too close to the tops and interfere slightly.  This needs to be clearanced and then the tips can be centered better.

9)  Get the Boxster and 996 their annual inspection (Boxster due and 996 overdue).

10)  I may go ahead and just order the tires for the 944 new wheels from Amazon since I now have a balance on that dang card again until April.

I need to get #1, #2 and #6 going this week.  I did #5 on the Boxster tonight.  I still need a bit more arranging in the garage to make this cleaner and easier.

Wow found this today on fleabay for a good price.  I've been looking for 2 years.  I can't wait to get this into my 996.

And we are down to 3 P cars and a Miata.  Ideally one or two of them will sell by fall.

It's pretty common on the turbos, not so much the C2s.  Those options on P cars really add up,and people splurge on the more expensive models.  Mine had some good options, but not the painted interior bits.  I also want to get sport seats with hard backs and have them painted to match, eventually.  The look is stunning in guards red over black interiors, in my opinion.

My car is a relative stripper.  It was custom ordered and the only real options are the sports seats, sunroof (which I wish it didn't have), painted center console, aluminum gauge faces and turbo side sills.  My sports seats aren't the painted back ones, which I do wish it had, along with heated seats.  Oh well, these are such ala carte ordered cars that you have to grab the best example you can that has most of the options you want.

I know what you mean.  I've decided if I were to get a 987.1, I want sport seats, sport chrono and a 6 spd.... in a color that isn't black.  They seem to be a bit difficult to find and if you do, they are pricey.

Now try to find a 987.2 with those requirements...basically impossible. And if you do, it's not black, it's...silver or gray. Maybe white if you're really lucky.

987.2s and 997.2s are rare just because the economy was so bad.  Apparently people stop buying P cars.... which makes the pre-owned supply difficult for guys like me.  I imagine 2020 Porsche's will be rare too.

I wanted a car with a color.  So silver wasn't really at the top of my list.  However, I really didn't want the grey leather interior and many of the cars with color came with that interior.  I also wanted to find a car locally as I've been burned too many times buying out of state.

That's how I ended up with my silver car.  It's not horrible but I would've prefered blue, red, white (unicorn!) maybe even yellow...

Well the 944S2 is sold and at it's new home in San Diego, CA.  It went to a home where it was wanted and it is quite the tale if you have time to read it.

https://rennlist.com/forums/924-931-944-951-968-forum/1210159-pretty-sure-i-just-got-scammed-out-of-6200-a.html

We did a lot of maintenance on the car to get it ready for the road trip.  We replaced the engine mounts, exhaust rings at the head, exhaust collector gaskets with new hardware, valve cover seals and gasket, new cam chain tensioner guides and wear pads, a puffy coolant hose, oil change, trans fluid change, reattached the rear view mirror and put on the new wheels and tires.

The new owner has a videography business and has several cameras.  He took a lot of photos and I did not.  I did get a few of him driving off in his new car, which handled the trip just fine.

I will miss it, but I needed the space (and funds:  got laid off 6/30).  Next I need to decide which convertible to keep and which to sell.  If I keep tye Miata, I could do lots of upgrades and maybe engine swap it.  If I stay with two M96 powered Porsche's I need to find an engine and start rebuilding.  Either sale will likely add a lift to the garage too.

And as far as work goes, I'm trying to acquire a truck business with 31 trucks currently.

At its new home.

Thanks for the vote of confidence.  I hope all is well in your little corner of our crazy world.  I'm working on acquiring a rather large business for the wife and I to manage and own.  We shall see how it all works out.

I'm still having a large internal debate on keeping the Boxster S or the Miata.  The Boxster is a Porsche and convertible, and the Miata is the world's most modifiable convertible.  I really like both.  Wife and the kiddo like the Porsche more.  There is an idea of selling the Miata and picking up some sort of Rallycross car since DFW now has rallycross.  I know a guy that started doing that and he is having a blast.  One thing is for sure.  I will never have more than 3 hobby cars at one time ever again.

And I do have the OEM body kit for it.  If I install it, and get the wheels refinished, it would look incredible.  I can always slow build a 3.6 or 3.8L engine for it too.

Well I finally got the turn signal stalk on the Boxster replaced, swapped out the center console, and adjusted the shifter.  I need to drive it 50 miles this week to reset the ECU and get it inspected and back into service.

I have no excuse for putting this stuff off so long.  It was all easy and the far is so much fun to drive.

Speed yellow painted console vs ugly yellow vinyl on side piece.

I also did away with the ashtray and installed the console storage pod.

Oil changes all around next.

Next up are yellow Porsche seat belts from Germany and a 996 gauge cluster ao I have an idea of oil pressure and alternator output.

I also ordered a new shift boot since the sun killed this one.  The car lives in a nice garage now.
