I recently took my Dodge Dakota out to a local AutoX . . .Stock everything 4.7L V8 and 5-speed manual . . .

There a few things I learned:

  1. Truck drift really well
  2. Stock Springs suck
  3. Mud tire hate fast and abrupt direction changes
  4. Trucks with mud tires drift really well
  5. Understeer to oversteer is only a throttle release away

Since I want still tow with the truck, I may just change from monster tall mud tires to something a bit shorter.

Check out some of the pics on my Cardomain site

In every review i read, the R/T package was always praised for its handling abilities. Maybe look into swapping in some R/T suspension components....

Skip Barber used the Dakotas for their driving schools when they were sponsored by Dodge. They put some lower-profile tires on them and they did surprisingly well on the skidpad!

SCCA rules specifally prohibit 4wd pickups, but the 2wd are a lot of fun to watch. This pic taken last season in MidGa region @ Watermelon Raceway. Viper engine in a pickup truck for the win!

Greg in his Cyclone(awd?) that ran our last event also was very fun to watch. Full throttle launches with at least a good amount of boost spooled, and that thing just squatted and WENT!

Syclones and Typhoons are awesome to watch launching . . .

I thinking of using R/T suspensions stuff. . . The 4.7L is lighter than the 5.9L so it should be just perfect.

Skip Barber still uses the Dakotas? Last I heard they used they to teach slid recovery in them
