Well, to be fair, none of this is from GM. Jalopnik can't really confirm anything at all.
Well to be fair, if you read the original Jalopnik article (linked in the Autoweek article), they have a screen shot of the Chevy web site that went public too soon and notified them of it.
In reality, I don't care. Continue to the Jalopnik bash fest.

I still wish they had just developed a high tech V8 for that model. They already have the basics - just take take a pair of their turbo Ecotec heads (from the LNF, LTG or more recent LHU (same as LNF but with flex fuel capability) with direct injection and stick them on a common crankcase (perhaps even a modified LS block). With no fuss at all they can get a 4 litre engine that puts out 700 bhp and around 600 ft-lbs. (my current on a 2 litre 4 cylinder version is 350 bhp, 375 Tq and 30 mpg+ when you don't have your foot to the floor).
Wouldn't that be a nice showpiece for a high end model?

I'm sort of wondering (as above) if its supercharged, but unless they increased the displacement (7L is huge already...) I don't think they could have gained 145hp and 175ftlbs in n/a form. The Viper's 8.4L makes "only" 600ftlbs. I suppose there's a chance they converted it to DOHC, but I doubt that.
As a viper owner, the stock heads and block are terrible. Porting the heads, a mild cam and a tune puts almost 650lb's to the rear wheel.
Personally I think the Italian overlords kept the power down on the motor so it would not steal sales.
I doubt it. How many people cross shop Vipers with Italian exotica? 2 different markets. Any horsepower left on the table will be found in future models.
Well, wearymicrobe himself was shopping Aston Martins and ended up buying a Viper. I think a lot of people are surprised when someone dropping that much money on a car is really looking for something to enjoy, not just something to impress people at the club. (not saying that's what you think, just it's true.. $100k cars are often just bought to enjoy.)
Last time I was looking at Astons, I bought a Viper.
Last time I was looking at Vipers, I bought a M5
Last time I was looking at a 360 spyder I bought a S2000 of all things.
People cross shop everything. If the new Viper had 750-775hp which is fully doable with a bit of development time they would definitely steal sales from the new market but more often killing people looking at say a used 430.

Why would they? GM has the best production cam-in-block engine in the world. It's reliable, makes as much power as it needs to (and has never failed to deliver more when needed), and it's extremely compact, with a low CG. Making it DOHC makes the packaging more difficult, raises the CG, and maybe costs the low-end torque that's one of the main reasons for buying a Chevy V8.
If you want a DOHC V8, buy a Ford.

GM doesn't do OHC V8 engines very well.. they have mastered the "single cam in the block with 2 valves in each cylinder" way of doing things, and they take on the "high tech" engines from other manufacturers quite well.. why change?
i know that you will come back with "they built the Northstar/Aurora engines, and don't forget the LT5 in the 90's Corvettes"... but those aren't really good examples of how to do it "right"..
The pushrod engines are competitive at Le Mans and they fit in little baby cars. Two thumbs up from this guy.
the LS performance heads flow pretty well... a bit of porting, direct injection, and some tweaking of electronics would get you most of the way to 620/650

Who are you and what are you doing on this cheap-ass car lovers site? lol
Last time I was looking at all those cars I was playing Forza.
