Okay, some of you have seen this in the classifieds and in build threads. There is an AW11 MR2 for sale in Houston (I'm in Dallas but can tow 7k lbs) for a good price along with quickjacks and some extras. I've been wanting quickjacks anyway. And as a total unit with the right accouting work I can get this car at challenge price. I can't really do the challenge this year since I just started a new job and my father in law passed away as well. I could definitely fit in for 2022 and may live quite a bit closer next year.
Currently my new fun favorite thing is rallycross. I've been ripping up the local (120 miles to the north) rallycross venue as often as I can in a stock 2002 Subaru RS. The guy that runs it just got an MR2 as well and swapped in a lighter more modern Toyota engine (bolts in NA). It did quite well for it's first runs ever.
Is an MR2 going to be as quick or quicker than my 02 RS once I learn to drive mid rear on dirt? I suspect it could be even faster. My biggest complaint abou the Subaru is the steering rack. Apparently quafe makes a quick rack ratio for the Toyota! Wow that would be nice. The car already comes with racing door panels, race seat, momo wheel and Koni's. It has lots of nice things, but I will definitely be starting in Mod RWD, which has quite a few competitors at my local events which would be nice.
I could run the car as is for a year getting plenty of miles and data and keeping it reliable pre challenge!
Post challenge I could go nuts with more power, engine swaps, etc., and possibly even return with it in exhibition.
What says the hive? How great is the AW11 MR2? Get it and ditch grandma's Impreza? Or keep hunting for a WRX?
The economical choice is actually the Mister Two.... did I mention two is my lucky number since 1st grade? But then I will have two mid engine RWD cars too.
