Here is how the 5 sits now. H&R springs with KYB monotubes, SPC rear camber arms, 18x9.5 Motegi Technomesh wheels with 245/40 Cooper RS3-A's. The fenders are rolled... Only other mods are a set of CorkSport LED foglights, and a larger rear wiper.

My 225/55 winter tires rub a little if the car is loaded, and I have a fender roller.  Why didn't I think to roll them, because wife,s car.

Since I'll be flying to my new job and I won't have a vehicle, I have been looking at Mazda5s and Honda Fits. Something that gets decent mileage, can be had with a manual, is easy to drive in a dense urban setting and has decent cargo room.

I found a 2006 Mazda 5 with 152k for $2800. It's in decent shape. Is that about what I can expect to find?

Want to see the guts of a Mazda 5 auto trans and learn the difference between 4 speed and 5 speed filters? Here you go!

Well there was popular demand on the Mazda 5 Owner's Club page, so I made an Intro video of my current 5 and it's mods to date. So far I'm the only person with rolled fenders. laugh

Looks fantastic. I especially like how you don't have the windows tinted, it looks better that way.

Thanks! I hate the wheels being black, I want to paint them gold. Go for the JPS look.

Time to replace axles on mine. Leaking now after 7 years

Pretty much the only issue we've had with our 5 has been the lack of cargo room.  With three kids and two adults, there's not any place for luggage so taking a regular weekend trip is a challenge and going somewhere for Christmas was nigh impossible.  For $60, though, I got a soft car-top luggage carrier from Rightline that has 15 cuft of capacity and is designed to work with or without a roof rack.  We do not have a roof rack and it went on and held tight with very little effort for about 500-600 miles there and back.  Before the trip we were kicking around the idea of replacing it with something bigger, but with that bag there is absolutely no need.

Mine has had a 21 cubic feet Thule box on top.

I just use all the smuggler's compartments - under both second row seats, under the rear parcel and under the spare, and the mini-cubby on the right rear. I also have a factory roof rack, but no box for it yet.

I bought these roof racks in 2015

ROLA 59834 Removable Anchor Point Extended APE Series Roof Rack for Mazda 5

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004R2Y64S/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

At the time they cost me $227.  They have been great and we used them with the big Sears box that we borrowed from friends.  This mounts directly to the factory mounting points.

One of the secrets has been to use some Gorilla tape on the underside or the cross bars to block off the openings and eliminate the "whistling".

Thanks for the tip on the whistling, my mom gave me the factory set from her 5.  She took them off due to the noise, I haven't used them yet.  They are from a 2013, I hope they fit my 2009.

In reply to akylekoz :

Rola says that the rack above fits all Mazda5 years of '06-'17.  That leads me to hope that your Gen2 factory units may fit the Gen1.

In reply to akylekoz :

They will. The roof skin was the only body panel that didn't change on the gen change. Also, the factory ones (at least the gen 1 versions) don't have holes, so they don't whistle.

My current Mazda5 is suffering from some unique suspension woes.

I'm looking at some mid-range coilovers, what say the hive?

I figured with the 15% off coupon from eBay that they couldn't be that bad, especially since they were Mazda5 specific. I can always put better struts together with my H&R's and sell these to some stance fool if they suck. Will report back!

I have full h&r coil overs on my ms3. Will bolt to a mz5.  And I'm quite happy with them.

I really considered those, but they did not have very favorable reviews, and I wasn't happy with the H&R springs on the 5 already.
