So I found an elusive 89 Mazda RX-7 GTUs in Savannah, GA on CL. I live in Massachusetts, so bringing the car up here is an issue. I would like the GRM brain-trust's advice on getting a car from a distant state. I haven't got in touch with the owner yet, so I don't know if the car is running and road-worthy yet.

Shipping it is out of the question, as I am not paying $1000 to have a $1200 car shipped to me. I'd like my total investment for buying and getting the car home not to exceed $1750.

Mass. does not issue temporary license plates. I would have to do a plate transfer from my current RX-7 to the GTUs. That means I need to have the bill of sale and title already in hand, bring it to the DMV, and get my insurance transferred to the GTUs. Sounds to me like the only way I could do this is to fly down to GA, get the paperwork, fly back to MA, then fly down to GA again to drive the car home. Does that sound right? Are there any ways to get the paperwork legally transferred via the mail or fax?

If it is not running or if I can't figure out a solution to the Mass. plate issue, would I be able to rent a pickup and trailer from, say, U-haul, to tow it back myself? It looks like rental will be at least as, if not more, expensive than shipping.

I still don't know what condition it is in, and therein lies the rub. I plan on calling the guy tomorrow and asking for details and photos since the item listing is light on info. It said it needs TLC, but hopefully it's not anything major. I can deal with it being a little temperamental, and my S4 GXL might even sacrifice a part or two for it, but the GTUs must get me from GA to MA without dying!

I don't have any friends that can lend me a pickup, and it looks like rental prices for pickups or U-Haul trucks will exceed just having it shipped (I HATE how they jack up the prices just because I'm 24...). So it HAS to be running for me to buy it.

Wonko, I'll look into the temp. plate thing for GA. If any GA GRMers can fill me in on if GA does temp. plates and how they work, or if you live near Savannah and would be willing to look at the car for me, let me know!

I have rented the uhaul full car trailers twice now with no problems. the trouble is they jack you on price if you go one way and will hit you $50+ if you rent one for 24 hours.

you don't have anything to tow with?

then call the guy and plan on driving back one way praying a lot on the drive back....

Mass does not do temp tags - when I bought the wife's Volvo XC90 the dealer fedex'd me the paperwork, I fedex'd back the signed papers and check, he fedex'd back good title and it was mine. Went to my local DMV, got plates, flew to Boston, dealer picked me up, drove 5 hours back home.

If GA does temp tags that's a much better way to go. But really sounds like you need to find out from someone you can trust to look at the car and see if it'll get you home.

Heres my result of one way plane tickets to pick up a car...

Hello all.

As some of you might know. Jane and I fly in to Millwakee to go get a 62 dodge parts car that was to be in driveable shape.

Jane and myself got back form our long weekend Tuesday at ~ 1:00pm. Well the trip to Milwaukee started out okay but quickly turned sour….

At the airport the outside check in computer crashed, as he was tiring to check us in. Inside there was a snotty 20 something girl behind us that insisted on using the kiosk check in when she was next in line for the teller and was told not to use it by her boy friend and the teller. The teller checked us in and mistakenly put one to the girls baggage tickets on my Tool Box, thus my tool box when to Seattle Washington instead of Milwaukee.

The seller of the car came and picked us up at the airport. When we got to the house and saw the car I was disappointed to find more then the “good for its age” rust. I know I’d find more then promise but this was horrifying! They’re a 1-foot square missing under your feet on both sides!! And it’s been there a long time as the carpet was worn away! Next a look at the front end and hey there’s a missing headlight, “Oh ya but you don’t need head lights” Say what! Mr. I’m driving 1100 miles I need head lights. Also missing was a big area behind the lower lights in the fender like 14 inches back on both sides. So off to Checkers to get headlights and wiper blades and duct tape. Got the lights and tape no problem but the wipers were a no go, needed ANCO brand refills, as the arm is spot-welded on. Okay Rain-X for now stop at Wal-mart latter for the Anco refills. Back to the houses. Car runs but not great have tune up parts but no tools, seller has little so I pass on the tune up. We pay and get out of there.

Off to the tire shop as the tires are junk not a little worn….JUNK. Prayed we’d make it that far we did. On the way the car stalled four times and once it was warm the trany at red lights would fall out of gear then as you stepped on the gas it would slam in and learch and leave a pile of rust behind. The fluid level was good and it smelt fine before we left. Pull in to Mr. P’s tires to find a very energetic guy to help us. Jane’s not looking good so I ask her she says we need to tow it cause we have no tools and there tornado and hail warnings. So I have the guy mount two used tires so we can us one of those dollies to tow it. Off to U-Haul (should be called U-are screwed) we get there they tell me it’s too wide for a dolly. Okay pall give me the trailer. Sorry we don’t have one but the downtown one does. Okay I’ll go there but wait they don’t have any trucks! So Jane drives a F350 with the 14-foot box and I drive the 62 Dart over to the downtown local. After an hour wait at the second u-haul we get a new looking trailer! Oh but wait there’s no wires for the lights. Oh Mr. U-haul…. oh I’ll just twist them together for you…. what no tape! You’ve got to be kidding right! Nope have a nice day…. Off to the gas station as the trucks blinking LOW FUEL…. but it should have a ¼ tank.

Okay all loaded up. Head in to down town Milwaukee. WOW what a nice city!! Not crowed like Boston or any other big city. Well labeled and laid out streets. Find the hotel after driving by twice while looking for a parking lot that will take us. We do with little problem, just promises the guy were not moving it until we leave the next day.

Call the airline, Were is my box? Well sir it should be hear on the 9pm flight we’ll call you. Okay. Off to dinner We’ve not eaten since 4am. We walk down to the 3rd Street Pier. Very nice up scale fish and steak house, but do to strange weather no out side dinning tonight. Nice view of the river and down town. On the way back it pours rain were drenched. Umbrellas are still packed Doh………..

Sunday: No word from the airline. I’m pissed! There ~ $600 in tools in the box and it’s cost me a lot for the dam u-haul. I asked to be called ASAP but no word comes. Off on a 1.3 mile walk to breakfast at Miss Katie’s Dinner. (food network show $40 a day was there last month) Nice place great food and CHEAP. A definite must when we go back.

Nice clean city, I noted very few people out and about, but all are friendly with “Good morning” ECT.

We head for home. Were making good time. Drive past Miller park for Jane the ever Baseball fan. Then past the home of the white sox when the phone rings, Mr. Leary we have your bag in Milwaukee. Well that’s fine but were not there anymore! In to Indiana and massive wind and rain and traffic stops. We hear tales of a massive accident we can see the lights. Almost four hours latter were moving again but we tired no way well make Buffalo today not even Cleveland, so we stop just over the Ohio boarder. Fill up with free food and head out. We make it to Buffalo at 4pm is windy and cloudy, we drove up to the American side of Niagara Falls. But can’t find a place to park!! We drive around the block five times when a guy who looks home less on a bike rides up and tells us where to go. We get there he’s there! Kind of creepy but it turns out he owns the lot! Half price cause it looks like rain. It holds off until were almost back this time we’ve got the umbrellas. Then it’s a mad dash for the Mass boarder and at 11:45 we pulled in to Lee Ma. And the super 8.

Monday: Wake up breakfast at Joes in down town Lee. Joes is a small dinner that was the setting for Norman Rockwell’s painting of the Run-a-way. The boy with a bag sitting at the bar next to a cop. Then it’s a 3-hour ride to home drop off the dealer plate along the way, as we don’t need it with the trailer. Drop off the car at the garage and then home to drop off the luggage and up to Keene NH to drop off the U-Haul. Then a dash to Lexington MA to pick up Jane’s car at Mom and Dads.

So would the car have made it? Yes I think so but it would have required work to do it and with out tools it would not have been a pretty site. Was it worth the money? Depends on how you look at it. We’re safe, we had fun, and I got my parts.

So my $500 car cost me closer to $2600 by the time it was back in Mass.

I have had much better luck that you 44dwarf but... it still always costs more than I think it will and it never goes as planned. Example:

When I bought my E30 it was rough so I didn't want to pay for tags and ins. until I was done and I wasn't quite sure if it could be driven. So, I took my trusty Tundra, open trailer and 6yr old son to meet the seller in a torrential 3 day rainstorm that had all kinds of flood warnings issued.

I got there, found exactly what I was looking for, bought the car, loaded it up and headed for home soaked to the bone but happy. Perfect... until I stopped for gas in Bethlehem, PA. Apparently the tanks were flooding and I pumped about 20 gallons of water into my tank. We got all of 500ft from the station and it died. I walked back to the station not really knowing what was wrong until I saw 5 other people trying to lurch away from the pumps. The guy took my info, said sorry and to contact them - they would pay for the tow and service. Crap.

Now I have a disabled truck, with a 20' trailer, an E30 that has been parked for 3 yrs and a soaking 6yr old along for entertainment... sitting half in the road, 100 miles from home in a rain storm.

I did what any other knuckleheaded guy would do - unloaded the E30, had the tow guy jump it, and he took the truck and trailer - my son and I drove the unlicensed, partly functional E30 with 3yr old gas, dry rotted wipers, hard as stones tires, and 15yr old timing belt and drove it home 3hrs in the pouring rain.

Oddly... it was uneventful after that. The station actually paid the $700 towing and service bill for the Tundra and the E30 went on to 3yrs of DD work and just became my race car over the winter.

When I bought Mrs. Minis 911 in N.H., I had it transported. I figured what it would cost me to drive(or fly) there and back, along with motels and meals, and decided it was far more expedient to use a shipper. the dealer recommended one that he used in the past so I tried him- I,Cartius-,based in N.H., but goes everywhere. It cost me $300 to have it shipped right to my door, and I'll use him again, if I ever buy another vehicle from out of state. Prior to this, I bought my Montero from a guy in VT..I went to the DMV in VT., got a 30 day temp and drove home.Fortunately it was uneventful, but by the time we paid tolls, gas, meals and a room for the night, and the time it took, it wasn't worth it.

i dont know how much of a stickler the authorities are north of the carolinas, but around here all you really seem to need is:

a title with your name on it (can still be in ink on the backside of the title with a notary stamp), a piece of cardboard with "tag applied for" written in marker, and an honest face.

also check with your insurer. mine covers anything i buy for the 10 days without me even having to call them and tell them what it is. yours may require a vin or something before you can drive it, but that is honestly more important than the tag. even if you get a ticket for an unregistered vehicle. most jurisdictions will drop the charges if you show them that a tag was obtained within 30 days of the infraction. (true from experience in NC anyway)
