Did a light hone on my M42 cylinder bores before I put it back together with new rings/seals. I haven't honed a cylinder before but have seen it done many times. Anyhow, just looking for some affirmation here.

Once complete the pattern is a decent crosshatch. My main question is just about "how it feels."

With the underside of my finger, the cylinder walls feel perfectly smooth. If I use the tip of my fingernail, I can slightly feel the structure (I mean, very lightly). Is this how it should be?

Without pics, what you describe sounds correct. Wash the cylinders down very well. I've always used dish soap and water, then follow that up with clear water, then finish that up with alcohol, then oil. I think my rinse regimen is overkill, but I saw the effects of a guy that didn't rinse at all

Here a pic, though due to lighting (and cheap camera) it looks different in person. Can't really see the cross-hatch pattern because of the direction of the light.

That's for the point about cleaning. I'm pretty methodical about cleaning things so will use your "overkill" methode..

Brake parts cleaner and a lint free cloth works for me.

I would have preferred the former but used the latter.

I wouldn't use it if I was doing a true "hone," but really I was just doing a de-glaze since the walls looked pretty good already.

Your cross hatch seems an acute angle, I shoot for 45 degrees. Either speed up your stroke or slow down the hone.

you might check your rings... different grit levels for different rings... too fine and some rings will never bed in

IDK, I'm using stock BMW e30 rings. Never seen anything saying what grit they use.

As to angle, I was using the drill at the slowest setting and wearing out my arms going up and down so fast. I'll take another pic and see if it shows the angle better.

maybe this photo shows it better. Not nearly as pretty as your cylinder, that's for sure :whatthe

Angle looks right, cylinder's better than it was?

Perfect.

Why is it that every time I see this subject in the stack I see it as "Cylinder Hooning" and get VERY excited. I don't know what cylinder hooning is, but I want to.
