Last Sunday, I had to run to the grocery store up the street early in the AM. My wife wanted to hit up a local pond for the day, so I had to grab a few things. When I came out of the store, This sweet Barracuda was sitting next to my car:

And it had these badges on the back:

And this gauge panel with an AFR and digital boost gauge:

As I was finishing up packing the car, the owner and his wife came out, so I had to ask if it really had a turbo EFI slant six under the hood. He said, "It would be pretty tacky to put those badges on the back of the car if it didn’t!”.

He popped the hood, and I saw this:

He told me that he used the Grand National's setup as an inspiration, and since the engines were similarly sized (his was bored to a 232 vs the GN's 231), he used off-the-shelf stuff from the GM parts bin along with a modded Offenhauser intake and aftermarket fuel rail to make it all work. It's been installed for over a decade, and it works!

I had to share this thing with the world, and I thought I'd share it with you guys, too. I know want a turbo EFI slant six powered something! And if any of you know the guy (his name is Bob DiBiase, lives in Lakeville, MA, and is a member over at SlantSix.org and wrote this amazing piece on converting to GM EFI WAY back in 2001 ) send him over!

I've been following a couple of /6 turbo installs over on For A-Bodies Only and they're great. Seems like a (relatively) easy upgrade since so many Chrysler products had the /6 originally.

This Barracuda install is certainly clean!

That is neat. I hang out on fordsix.com sometimes just too see the turbo builds.

There's a guy at my company who has a similar setup on a Plymouth Valiant. I believe he used Megasquirt for the EFI control.

Now that is a cool car! I'm curious what king of HP/TQ/MPG he gets. WHat transmission is he running?

So, no intercooler and a non-crossflow head?

I thought my IATs were bad when I had the air filter pulling hot post-radiator air.

I have no clue on how much power it makes or the transmission (I'm assuming it's a 904?) because I only spoke to the guy for like 5 minutes. I don't think he's ever dynoed it, I didn't get that vibe from him. It's a cruiser, plain and simple. But a freaking cool cruiser at that!!!

It's neat and all, but a mild naturally aspirated 360 would do everything just as good..

This from a guy that owns a Turbocharged Regal..

If built right a 904 can be VERY strong some say even better the a 727 and lighter too, But you need the right builder.

Very nice clean car I'll have to look for it at some shows this summer if I get down that way.

I've been obsessed with this car since I saw it. I've been thinking about finding a 70's or 80's short bed D100/D150 with a Leaning Tower of Power to turbocharge.

YES!!

Lots of room for "engineering" too. Make mine using a '60s D100 please.

I was actually trying to talk hollis into this Monday night. I didn't realize people were already doing it. His is a 70 valiant 4 door daily.

Also, he has a great running 225/904 he's pulling if someone needs it...

I've seen a couple like this. That is definitely the cleanest installation I've seen. I like the packaging.

I'm kind of surprised you don't see too many turbo 318's out there. You can put the 340-360 heads and get the perfect compression ratio for a turbo and then pump in 8-10 PSI and get a really nice running engine. It seems like a natural fit.

I drive by that truck all the time! It's usually parked right outside the town center at a brick building. Love that thing. Studebaker trucks rule, and that one now rules 1,000,000x harder now that I know it has a turbo Slant Six.

Yup, that's him! He did a lot of work for Perewicz (for magazine featured bikes) and never got credit. He's made some amazing creations is that old shop.

And the later Magnum 318s and 360s will take 8 - 10 psi quite happily without ever cracking them open. A few have been pushed a good bit harder and lived.
