Proterra was using 2 speed and 3 speed transmission on their electric busses.  They were basically IIRC modified Lenco units, similar to drag racing boxes.  They had some sort of automatic shifting to them.  They needed the torque to get the busses off the line using a somewhat smaller electric motor.

If they're like a Lenco, they're just planetary gearboxes and you "shift" them by releasing the band. Seems like an ideal place to use them really.

Toyota has something close with their rear axle in the Highlanders. It's a little independent rear dude. I thought they had one for real; but I think everyone is on independent rear now.
