Alfa V6, Citroen SM, Lamborghini V12, Fiat SOHC 4 cylinder. One that surprisingly didnt sound that exciting was a Maserati 425 that I drove once. The fact that it was an automatic and not running right probably didnt help though.

RX8s coming down the straight at Mid-Ohio. Best is when you can get towards the middle so you can hear them coming and going...

Mine is obviously a big block FE hitting 6k plus open headers or otherwise.

A sbc with a rowdy cam and flowmasters has a special place in my heart though.

The 3800 series GM motors with a nice set of duals is good even in the 3100 version.

Couldn't find a video on Youtube but my all time favorite engine sound is a 60+ sportfish at idle/backing into a slip or getting up to speed. I'll make a recording next time.

Chasing Classic Cars had an episode where they had an early race/road car Ferrari that sounded awesome. I think it was owned by the rich dealership guy named Herb. It was a small V-12, but sounded kinda like a hotted up V-8.

Mine runs 2.5" from the turbos back, no cat, no mufflers, no crossover pipe. It sounds like a pair of pissed off Harleys, the idle is very lumpy, it sounds good in a "that's different" type of way. Odd-fire = odd-sound.

Four cylinder engine sounds suck, and V8s are old hat and tedious, although I do recall some McLarens that were tuning beside me in the racing pits at SIR that gave a momentary stir.

By far my favourites are a straight 6 - old Alfa is particularly toothsome, and V12. I may get ejected from the Lamborghini Owners Club for having replaced my intermediate silencers with pieces of straight pipe because they are too quiet, but going out on a crisp cool morning around 5-6 AM and listening to the wailing V12 sounds near red line bouncing off the bluffs at the side of the highway make me not care.

Lots of good suggestions in this thread. I have to admit to having enjoyed many different engine sounds posted so far; the screaming little Nissan S20 six in the Skyline, the two-stroke SAAB rally car, a small-block Ford with an X-pipe, and there is something about the Alfa V6.

For my all-time favorite it is tough to beat an uncorked and highly-tuned V-12. I fondly remember a local trackday in the late-90's where someone showed up with a Ferrari F50 with a barely-muffled exhaust. When I saw the car sitting in the pits, I dismissed it as ridiculous, overpriced, and so far over-the-top I was just waiting for a well-driven Corvette or 911 to embarrass the Ferrari. Then it pulled out onto the track and the owner really drove the snot out of it...it sounded so amazing that I instantly fell in love with the F50 despite the ungainly styling. I left that day feeling like even if Ferrari had charged double it would still be worth the price.

F50 low quality, but gives an idea of the impact of the sound!

For something more down to earth, and since others have posted the suggestion without a link, I nominate my personal favorite four cylinder, the Toyota 4A-GE...it sounds pretty good when tuned, whether mild or wild:

Mild-and I should mention I have no idea what is going on here-I think trackdays are different in Russia

Wild-one of the more impressive local Pacific NW cars with a 16-valve 4A-GE

I wound up driving next to some sort of Maserati roadster yesterday (please don't revoke my car-guy card; I just don't follow newish exotics very closely). It did sound absolutely fantastic.

Not the greatest clip, but wait till the end of the video.

When that motor is wound up it is something special.
