... that "grip-driving" is indeed faster than drifting. I know this is of little surprise to anyone here, but it might be nice to bookmark for those pesky kids who still think sideways = fast. "Look, notice how every time he pitches it sideways the camera car catches right up? What's that tell you?"

Sideways is not faster, but as someone who winter drives an FRS, I can tell you it is more funer.

Well a red car with a Ferrari engine sideways can be faster but your first name has to be Gilles.
Huh? Those dirt track cars must be doing it wrong. Better go tell them that.

Funny thing is many of the top drivers try to set them up to drive as straight as they can but the thing about dirt racing is the track is never exactly the same as it can be with pavement. During one night the track is constantly changing plus you also have the weather and time of the year factors aswell. These all play a role in how the car is driven.
There was a test on this a long time ago, and while, of course, grip driving is faster around a track, drifting had a higher entry speed, couple that with being able to be sideways around a corner, and that means you occupy more space going into a corner and have the advantage of entry speed. So as long as you have the straight line advantage, in theory, you could hold off a faster driver by driving like a black flagged Chuck Mangione.
I came into this thread expecting this video:
