LEENDE - Update 6.40 pm - A racing car was run into the public in Leende in Brabant after an autocross event. There are several injured. The driver and a second suspect were arrested.

Let the police know on social media. The 21-year-old driver from Reuver is said to have been run into the public during an award ceremony. He was arrested and transferred to the police station, just like a 17-year-old woman from Veghel, whose role is still unclear.

Emergency services have arrived en masse. According to police, four wounded were taken to the hospital. Two men, a woman and a boy. Ambulance personnel checked three more people on the spot.
"A fight got out of hand"

Possibly a fight that got out of hand is the reason for the drama. The police announced this some time after the incident.

There was a lot of commotion at the event. There would also have been fighting. "The police had to be on the line to keep the public at bay," said a spokesperson.
The wounded are cared for, bystanders are white hot.

What exactly happened is currently being investigated. Specialists from the traffic accident service are on site. The two suspects who were arrested are being interrogated.

The Leende autocross, organized by the Kempercross association, was held on Maarheezerweg in Leende in Brabant.

So, autocrossing in The Netherlands is a thing, and apparently they take it serious.  Was that cone inside the marks or not?

After an autocross in Leende (Noord-Brabant), a racing car hit the public on Sunday. Four people, including a boy, were injured and taken to hospital, three others were checked by ambulance personnel. Agents had to intervene when people from the public assaulted two suspects in the racing car.

The driver of the car, a 21-year-old man from Reuver, was arrested, just like a 17-year-old woman from Veghel. The four injured are two men, a woman and a boy, police said. Nothing is yet known about the nature and severity of their injuries.

According to the police, a possible cause of the cross-incident is a fight that got out of hand. The organization of the event sees the hassle of money as a possible cause, reports the Eindhovens Dagblad. The fight arose when the organization wanted to cancel the last of the three races of the day because there was not enough visibility due to the drought and dust.

Some participants then wanted their money back, and there was a fight and fighting. "Then it went completely wrong," organizer Rowin de Bruijn told the Eindhovens Dagblad. "I heard a car coming that drove into the public at about forty kilometers per hour."

The Leende autocross, organized by the Kempencross association, was held on Maarheezerweg in Leende in Brabant. The president of the association said that he had seen the events up close, but was too emotional to be able to tell something about it.

Specialists from the traffic accident service investigate the circumstances of the incident that occurred shortly after 5 p.m. on Sunday.

It does appear to have been what we would call rallycross.  Another site ran a blog that had this:

18.36. According to a bystander, three races would be held on Sunday. One race was cancelled. The crossers who would drive that race wanted to get their money back at the bar. There was a fight. After that a man got into a car and entered the public. "It's ridiculous, it was about ten and they went into the audience at 50 to 60 kilometers per hour," the boy says. His father is one of the wounded. He probably has a broken leg. The organization confirms this story. The race was canceled because the terrain was too dry.

19.01 According to the police, the two suspects were both in the car driving into the public, but visitors on the scene contradict that. Only the man was in the car. After the incident, a large group of people from the public allegedly attacked and detained the driver.

According to organizer De Bruijn, the man wanted to continue driving after he had been hit by people. He then stopped the car with a number of people. The wheels got stuck in the sand and they held the driver until the police arrived.

Actually it makes me feel better that this kind of berked up $hite isn’t unique to the United States.  It often seems it is.

It's not unique to the US, sadly.  I was surprised to see it wasn't too, though. My first thought was the UK.

I lived in London for a short stint and I never saw more fist fights in a short time span than I did in my time there. People would just SNAP.

That’ll teach em to cancel an event. Just kidding. But seriously, if it’s rallycross, why would you cancel at all? Everything that makes the course harder makes the day funner! And don’t even give that crap about “visibility and safety”. Your corner works are in just as much danger regardless of visibility. It the safety steward’s job to place those workers out of harm’s way.
