Am I delusional or was there a "formal" open-wheel class using Golf/Rabbit engines?

I'm having some email dialog with a Kiwi involved in Formula Hayabusa and we're talking US classes. I could have sworn there was something like Formula First using the water-cooled VW mills, but I have no idea what it is/was called.

Thanks. I knew of Super Vee, but I thought they'd run the air-cooled mill.

Google image "Ralt RT5" and you will see a typical Formula Super Vee. Obsolete in road racing now but still used for Solo in B Mod.
