Mrs. Dx currently has a 12 Jetta but I think she has the itch for something else. I found a couple 2010ish Priuses for reasonable price. How do they work as a commuter car? She drives about 30 miles a day round trip.

Our 07 has 160k on it and rises by about 80 miles a day. No hiccups.

Have you looked at Volts?

They're boring, comfortable, reliable, and spacious. So, they're pretty darn good.

The Volt is an intriguing option actually - used ones seem to go for $14-16k for low mileage examples. They're also comfortable and reliable from what I can tell, and the electric power is great, but the cargo capacity is much smaller if that's an issue.

My younger brother has a 100 mile round trip commute and has been driving one for the last few years with no problems. It's boring, but he's also getting 45-50mpg. Poor guy.....he actually sold his 330i ZHP and now drives the Prius exclusively. He just couldn't turn down getting twice the mileage that the BMW could give him. (especially when gas prices were high) He also has two small children and a budget-conscious wife.....so YMMV.

They are great.

FYI, a 2010 is a 3rd gen. They get better mileage than the 2nd and 1st gen cars. Pretty impressive actually.

They're pretty much the best commuter car for the money in the world unless you don't know or care how it works and expect it to be dynamically exciting. If you know how it works and don't care about going fast it's thoroughly impressive that you can own something like that for as little as 4 grand these days.
