How do dealers continue to exist?

This. New Jersey successfully sued Tesla for their direct to customer sales model. I guess when you make enough money lying and fleecing customers you can afford lobbyists to continue doing so "legally".

FWIW, I have bought 4 new cars in my life, from 4 different dealers. All were a good experience.

I actually believe that car manufacturers should be allowed to sell directly if they choose that model. I also believe that dealers are NOT all evil bloodsucking lying cheats.

This is in contrast to Cleveland Bourbon, which I bought because CLEVELAND. But it's not aged naturally, it is pressure aged by some weird process that some eggheads developed. It's harsh and crappy and I will not buy it again. If it was $10 a fifth then I'd say "meh" but it's $40 a bottle and you can do far, far, FAR better for half that, with bourbons aged the proper way, by sitting in a barrel for nine years.

I believe car manufacturers (and ALL businesses) should operate within the laws of the jurisdictions they are operating in. They are welcome to seek to change the laws.

Tesla didn't loose a single sale, or close a single dealership. They just parlayed the whole fiasco into a free advertising and media bonanza.

The problem is that somebody needs to own a big piece of land to keep all the shiny new cars on.

Hey, I know, there are a lot of whinny dealers suck threads...so I'll post in them...

you know car buying at a dealership is a game. You just need to learn the rules of the game, use them to gain advantage and then have fun playing it.

Again, I am a professional buyer, so I like the negotiation. I don't take it personally and no problem walking away from a deal.

on trick is to get them to agree to a number that is out the door, that way they can't try to tack on extra cost. I also get them to throw in other stuff like coupons for car detailing or service (like oil changes). it is worth money, but usually not enough for them to care.

It all ended okay in the end, so sorry for being a drama queen.

My last trip to a dealer was a good one. Great people no hasels The MRRP was never even discussed. The funny part was I founf then by accident. I was literly driving down the road to a job and had about an hour to kill and saw a dodge dealer so I went in. I have been halfway looking at getting a Dodge Charger and figuared why not. When it comes time to order one I am going back.

Ohya and for those that think you have to purchas off the lot that is not true you can order it exactly the way you want. It takes 6-8 weeks to get the car but if you want it just the way you want it Dodge will do it with out any issues.

Yep here we go again. All of us that make a living helping people and selling product are pure evil and there isn't a single good one anywhere. Ever. He'll I'm not sure how I can even sleep at nigh the way I rip people off.

Ugh, I regret my decision to make this thread. I realize people make a living at this and it's not all a bunch of crooks. It's a stressful situation negotiating and there is a lot of confusion around the whole process sometimes and the costs on both sides. I'm not making excuses, I just hate doing it, even if the process goes well as it ended up here.

Best Buy is usually the same size as a car dealership. Fry's is usually much larger. Both are far better than dealerships for cars, Fry's especially.

You don't need salesmen and commission and trying to stack on all kinds of fees to sell products. I want to go to a dealer, pick my car, and buy it. I don't want to have hours long arguments with people between those steps.

Even better would be to configure the car, order it online, see "will be delivered at", and take delivery at my house. Like how online PC builders work.

I was out shopping cars today and was looking at private party with a pocket full of cash. After several disappointing stops, I went by a couple dealers just to see. At one of the dealers, I found exactly the car I was looking for and at the right price. It was at a Chevy dealer and they were asking 6k. The salesman actually talked me out of it and sent me on my way as he did not believe they would finance it if I put down half, didn't even try. I didn't think that was right so I called the dealer and asked someone else. They said they could. I told him I would call him back in 20 minutes when I got home as I was dropping off the Mrs and the baby.

20 minutes later, he had left for the day. The next salesmen didn't want to help and the original salesperson didn't answer their cell phone. By this point in time, I had given up on financing and was just going to put it on the credit card. No one would sell me the car. It was insane, no one would sell me a car. I will say, car salesmen are just like everyone else, some good, some bad.

Well if the seller accepts paypal you can put a car on credit. I've done that with a motorcycle when i bought one off ebay. Used a debit card but credit is an option there.

I would buy a new car from ebay motors. I buy everything else there. Bought the last three or four work trucks and machines unseen from internet sources. Sold my last house privately, bought the current one privately, bought my 30 by 48 foot shop online... I agree, dealers and middlemen of every type should be consigned to the scrap heap of history. But if you keep using them you are prolonging the agony.
