For your dead pixel problem if you don't want to fix yourself: http://xemodex.com/technologyimproved/bmw

My cousin just used them for a Volvo cluster and it worked perfectly. The local euro specialist also uses them.

I used to have an Audi wagon, I got tired of fixing it. I think I need to look to the BMW side for a nice stick wagon.

Fair enough. Just remember it can be hard to read sarcasm in the written word. That's where the smilies come in handy....

Funny, my boss and I passed a 540i Sport in the parking lot and I commented that I liked that body style the best. He agreed and said he always wanted one (even though he can afford a new M5 if he wanted). I replied that I wanted a wagon version with a manual, but they are basically unicorns and you never see them.

That was yesterday, and BAM! There's one on the board today.

Congrats. Glad it all worked out. That's a sweet ride right there. Almost bought a co-workers E39 530i/5 speed instead of an E46. Love me some E39.

Here's the straight deal on e39 touring manual transmission cars in the US market:

  • e39 Introduced in US market 1997 as sedan in 528i - 540i variants

  • e39 face lift in 2001 adds 525i, replaces 528i w/ 530i, continues 540i.

  • e39 Touring introduced in US in 2001 in 2 versions: 525iT available in automatic or manual and 540iT available in automatic only.

Total production of e39 touring manual - about 200 cars.

In addition the 1999 and 2000 model years saw the 528i Touring offered in manual or automatic and 540i Touring as an automatic only.

How hard is it to convert to manual? I think all the parts exist, right? And for the eventual LSx conversion, you're going to be in there anyway....

Nice!

My old boss had a 528iT E39 manual a couple of years ago. He went all "M5" with it, minus the engine. Was a mean car!

Congrats!

Smiles are for people who overpay for cars and who dont check pixels... Of course im kidding. I just know whenever I buy anything with 4 wheels there are always a couple clowns who try to rain on the parade. Typically they say you overpaid and then they provide craigslist links to the same model car. Usually the ads are for crappier, higher mile cars though but they pretend the cars are pristine.

I love the E39. Just so badass and sinister looking in black. That's one of the few cars that isn't a Panther that can part traffic.

I have seen that, not as much here as other places.

As I told my long-suffering wife: "This is a car that's got a KBB value of $4k in flawless condition, and Edmunds of about $6k. If I can get it in the driveway w/ a title and tag for $14k it'll be a steal"

I'm going to fix all the cosmetics and get it up to 100% all over. All it needs is a little paint-love, one spot of PDR, buffing out the headlight lenses, and a few bits of fresh rubber. Then it's essentially a new 11 year old $48k car.

Also - 200 was US T sales 2000-2003. The manual - automatic ratio is reversed everywhere else on earth. Try to find an automatic in Germany.

See, this is the E36 M3 I will just never understand from car manufacturers. They make a 540i manual in the sedan. From the rear doors forward, it is IDENTICAL. Zero extra engineering involved.

Why not make the wagon in a stick? I understand, it's not a hot-selling combination, and I would never expect dealers to stock them. But why are they completely unavailable for ordering if someone wants one?

god I still want a nice clean e39. I was close to getting a manual 540i a couple of years ago.
