Anyone remember this?

Well my Camaro/jeep good friend of mine and all round projector bought and has been sitting on it for a while. But now progress is being made, trans needed and overhaul and some exhaust/gasket redoing:
anyone have any info on this car? At some time the straight 6 was ditched for the AMC 390 v8 :O
We plan to get it ready for magnum opus next year or possibly 2016.
DOOOOO WAAAAANNNNNTTTT!!!!!!
So berkeleying cool!!!! I cannot wait to see the finished product. Get that dude on here and make a build thread!
I was just talking to John Buffum and showed him the pictures. He thought it might have been Gene Henderson's car. Gene is no longer around, but his son is, and might have some info on it.
I plan to spectate Magnum Opus again, so I heartily approve of this.
He also thought it raced in production when it first started racing.

Sure that isn't a 401? I think they're a lot more common on the ground. I'm a little curious how the round headlamp swap will look when the car is all together.
Build thread please. I want to know everything about this car. Whats the rest of the driveline?

it says D. Waheln or whalen on the drivers door then underneath it says "I'm a legend"
we have not found much about it.
My buddy doesn't forum much, or at all really.
He just rebuilt the Chrysler 727, its a 3 speed auto manual valve body with 4.10 gears and swapped to rear disc (using front disc brake parts)

He bought it that way, I'm not sure if he plans to swap them back to stock square or what. Whatever it is I think that's farther down the to do list right now. I don't know enough to be able to tell if its a 401 or 390 but I think they used the same block from 360 to 401 since AMC only had 1 v8.
oh and we took it to rallyX last year for fun with the trans all slipping and engine running hot (hence no hood):
+1 on the Gene Henderson reference. I think I saw this car run in Michigan - Northern Lights, POR maybe. Memory fades but I immediately thought of him when I saw this.

We DO live in Michigan! However, he bought this car from Colorado and had it shipped here. Needless to say it may get the AMC red/white/Blue theme when its done or just leave the patina as it is. My friends' opinion is that maybe a girl rallied it because of the bright pink/purple on the soft blue scheme.
Anyways rest assured friends that this car is in good hands :)

correct! this is an AMC factory rally car. it has 100% race miles on it.
Whalen would have driven it in the 90's.
Results can be seen here.
Gold Rush Rally
And looking further at those results, my boss was in the rally as well....so I'll ask him if he remembers the car.
There is at least 2 of the SX4's.
That's the one I saw!! It was really icy that year!
So glad that part of memory still works!

Excellent! please let me know what you find out. We are as curious as any cat ever could possibly be.
The numbers left on the car are 99 not 60 but that could have easily been changed.
ALSO looking on those results it looks like our rallycross director from the region co-drove to 3rd place. I always knew Bob was into 323s now I really know why... interesting!
If you look at the year previous, Whalen was not driving the SX4, he was in a jeep. Doesn't mean much, but it could show that it was a recent acquisition for him.
A 401 is a stroked 390. The block casting has "390" or "401" or whatever (290/304/343/360) stamped on the side...unless it was a service block, in which case it will be blank.

That thing is sweet! I’m guessing its no longer AWD since it has a V8?

false, kind of. It is v8 and 4WD
a lot of good source info in the AMC eagle wiki page.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMC_Eagle
Found yet another familiar name in the stpr results listed in the bibliography at the bottom. He's a fellow hillclimber that use to run an AMC eagle....I'll see if I can reach out to him and see what he knows.

From looking on the inside of this car I don't think its ever been rolled. Now I'm more curious than ever.
I'll be sure to snap more photos of this car soon for you all :)
