Next month Dirtfish rally school is hosting a novice rally school and a rally-x event the following day for like $200. Way too good of a deal for me to pass up.

I might be buying a second car in the next month or so but it's unlikely it will be ready in time for an auto x before the event.

So... I'm thinking rental car.

As everyone know rentals cars are the fastest cars in the world and I'm guaranteed to not damage my car.

So is this brilliant, or asinine? Would the SCCA even let me compete in a rental? What do we think?

You wouldn't be the first, over a decade ago a local chap won SF in a collection of Grand Prix GXPs that would be one of 4 colors depending upon which one he got from the rental agency for the weekend.

Pull the plate and any identifying markings off of it during the event. Hope that none of the pictures of the car during the event allow it to be identified as a rental.

And that the GPS tracker that they probably have on the car doesn't reveal any off-road shenanigans that require explaining later...

Be prepared to fix the car if you hit a tree.

There was a tale of a guy who used to fly around the country and win bracket races. All of them. In rental tauruses. Because the times were indexed and he had his breakout to a science...and the cars were autos. Infinitely repeatable results.

Also, rental cars are the fastest ones. Clarkson said so.

I did a rally school and rally-x event in a rented sedan. It was actually pretty awful, the California organizers had turned the field into a mud bog in case the dust was a problem. We were in the middle of a desert, everything was dust. The rock hard, high efficiency highway all seasons had no traction whatsoever.

Then I had to clean all the crap off the roof.

If you do, be careful. I've noticed there are clauses in the supplemental insurance that off roading is not covered anymore for some of the rental companies. They seem to be catching on...

If you've seen the general mayhem goes rallying episode of roadkill, that's the facility holding this event.

One of our members ran a rental car in a track day at Lime Rock.

Drove the h--- out of it.

Rotated the tires between runs.

Some rental car companies offer special performance cars even exotics. Hertz has their "Adrenaline Collection" and "Dream Car" line. I'm sure there's a bunch of fine print that you should read thoroughly, but seeing a brand new Camaro/Mustang/Challenger or the like running a RallyX would be pretty neat.

I would do the exact same thing if I lived near them!

It's not a illegal but do make sure any identifying marks aren't visible. If there's a GPS receiver visible in the car, cover it with tinfoil, it may have a data logger.

Worked for almost a year parking rental cars. You couldn't do anything worse than the customers or we drivers did. At least you won't be making meth in the rental car, that does some serious damage to the interior.

Two kind of cars will go anywhere, a four wheel drive and a rental car!
