t-5's and "world class" t-5's came in different model fords as well as nissan(84-86 300zx turbo, although not a world class) as well. they can be built to handle lots of power, they're cheaper and lighter than a t56 also. theres indefinate amount of upgrades and gear combos for the t-5's. checkout www.gforcetransmissions.com for some killer upgrades.
By the time you buy a "rebuilt" T5 (which usually involves upgrading to a Tremec case/gearset making it NOT a T5) it's only a $100 or so more for the T56.

i beg to disagree, case can stay the same. many other gearsets that are t5 indeed. anyhow, all and all at the end of the day a t5 saves weight and space. t56's do rock, just a weight and space sacrifice tags along and depending on your car/project a t56 may ultimately be unnecessary.
just my $.02
Why won't these fit the Camaros, can they be used in other projects

rear transaxle it doesn't mount to the engine, but to a torque tube that mates to the engine
Actually, the transaxle T56s are the same as a normal T56... where it counts anyway. You can take the torque tube off and put a bellhousing on it.
The main case of the T56 is identical in all applications. Over the years they modified the gear ratios, shift forks, and synchros, but its all interchangable. The front adapter plate was different depending on the application, as was the output housing, but the case and guts are mix n' match. The transaxle tail of a 'vette T56 can be replaced with a normal output shaft and output housing. And the front plate accepts a normal chevy bellhousing.
There is a guy in Clymer, PA who mid-mounted an LT1 in an S10, attached directly to a T56 transaxle from a 'vette. He simply put a bellhousing on it and mounted it up.

Now that's pretty cool!
puts all sorts of bad thoughts into my head
Yeah... that's one of the ways you can do a Mosler MT900. Most of them use the Porsce transaxle, but the T56 is possible
