Thanks, that's close.  Aren't they a variant of the R180?

I've never heard the two mentioned together, but they could be for all I know.  They use some of the same innards as Toyota truck axles.

why not an E30 LSD with custom (shortened) axles?

Cost of the axles and availability of the diff in the yard. I'm trying to do the whole diff swap for way less than $100.

I think that will be a tough task no matter what diff you choose.  You are just as likely to stumble onto a E30 LSD diff for under $100 as you are any of these choices.  I've had my eye on R160 prices for awhile now (I want to install them in my Triumphs).  Unless you get lucky and find someone who doesn't know what they have, the going price seems to be around $300 give or take $50 or so.

Should be less than $100 if you can find one in a junkyard- did they come in any of the more pedestrian Subarus?

Not LSD versions - yeah - those are dirt cheap.  Only in the WRX (and maybe XT models) and even then not all of those got the limited slip.

Just for fun since I have one here right now, the Polaris Ranger XP1000 front diff is less than 6" wide- probably won't hold up to a car with 300hp though.

Here's another dumb thought- this is a BMW 2002 rear subframe:

If you want to keep your axles, what about messing with the subframe?  You could cut the trailing arm tabs off and move them outwards, or maybe move the diff forward/backwards/up/down until the axle lengths are close enough to work.

I'm pretty sure most outbacks after 2000 had vlsds. Its not perfect but better than nothing.

Ah... one thing I keep forgetting - I'm looking for a rather specific version with the 3.54 ratio.  From what I can tell, ones with shorter ratios are considerably more common and cheaper.

Must have missed that. the 3.54 is a bit of an oddball then.

Yep.  Right now there aren't any 3.54 R160 versions on eBay. One R180 - with a $699 price tag. And one R200 - with a slightly more reasonable price, but those are too big for a Spitfire.  I did spot a R160 with a 3.08 ratio out of an Outback (in Canada?), but I need the version with bolt-on side covers and this version doesn't have them.

Regardless, none of the LSD equipped R1#0 diffs on eBay are anywhere close to $100.
