There is a VERY good shop in Raleigh, with a national reputation called Black Forest Industries, but that's probably not close enough.
Yeah they are a well known VW tuner. I've had good experiences with two other shops in the Raleigh area but unsure if they do VW explicitly especially the older ones. Black Forest should be top notch if its an option
Funny Black Forest was my first thought too but I figured they were too far away.
I think there is a shop in Wilmington, too, but that's still a bit of a ways away.
Looooong shot but you may try getting in touch with Charles from HumbleMechanic. He's in SE Raleigh area and recently retired from a VW dealer. At the very least, he'd probably talk to your son on the phone. Super cool guy.
