Or ideas, basically I impulse offered on this http://m.grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/200x-classifieds/toyota-4x4-500/51108/page1/ and now have to figure out on how to get it home. Part of me really wants to hop on a plane and just drive it home, roughly 3100 miles, 129 gallons of gas @ 24 mpg, about 460$ assuming an avg of 3.50 a gallon. Cheapest quote on shipping has been 1200 so far. So what does the grm collective say on this one?

1200 sounds cheap. Especially when one considers counting on flight costs, breakdowns, hotels, and loss of employment income. Not to mention the cab ride from SeaTac to Mount Vernon.

I've got to say, 1200 sounds cheap (did you try quoting it with uship as well)?

In any case, I'd never go that far for a car to drive home of that vintage and miles. Too much downside to go wrong away from home. If you do decide to drive, get the premiere AAA card so you can get 1 200 mile tow somewhere free if need be.

I've flown to pick up cars 1000 miles away. How much do you value your time?

I like the adventure of the fly/drive deal. It is likely to end in better stories than just unloading it when it arrives on the truck.

I'd fly and drive. If nothing else, it goes spectacularly badly, and you have an awesome story to tell.

If you don't want to hop on a plane and fly it home, I don't mind doing it. It sounds like I could sleep in the back. It won't save you any money, but it certainly would save you time.

GPS has it right..

Trip Log.. Day 3. Stuck in Kansas. After last nights debauchery after mudding I awoke in the bed of the truck needing to take a few locals home. Only problem is the toyota was stuck in some barbwire in a washout. After some calls to friends of my new friends a few fellas came down and helped me get out with a John Deer and a Wrangler. We proceded to do a little light wheeling to get back to the highway and had a great breakfast with my new friends in town. 2000 more miles .. ..

Vs.

Trip log Day 0. The truck has arrived. Jim Bob got out of his semi and spat some Skoal on the ground. He proceeded to back the truck off the trailer and into my garage. A bit of excitment occured when he drove over the corner of my ornamental shrub garden slightly displacing my garden gnome. It was a close one but Mr. Sparkle will be ok. 15 minutes after backing into the neighborhood the truck is tucked into the garage. Better go check the stock market and get ready for work.

I think you know what your choice must be.

Yikes,

"Honey, I just bought a new project car. The good news? It was dirt cheap. The bad news? Shipping is astronomical."

Considering what this truck cost, it's obvious it would have made more sense to buy one closer to "home" and pay more for it.

You guys suck.... cheapest plane ticket I've found was roughly 260ish. I had pretty much come to the conclusion to ship it after getting a 1k quote, but I guess I could just do my own version of the babe/cannonball. Hmmm lots of choices, upgrade the laptop, and bring an inverter along and I could do some work in the evenings as long as I had cell signal. Wouldn't be a total wash with the work aspect as I already telecommute. Comes with a bed canopy for turning the bed into a tent. I've got a small toolkit, set of combo wrenches, multimeter, tire plug kit, small 12v air compressor, .357, single bed air mattress should collapse down to fit it into a bag, and a sleeping bag. If I can dig up a pair of flat bars, snag a used tire from somewhere and throw it in the bed, along with a new valve stem just incase and I would be good to go. Right? The northwest is one of the few places in the US I haven't seen.(military brat that moved around alot) But once I got out of the mountains, it would be a rather long ride.(I miss the mountains)

Sounds like a GRM "Lets do something fun when I come through your town" type of trip.

The biggest hurdle is getting from seatac to mount Vernon.

Derick, I may take you up on the offer, but at the same time, I don't want to miss all the fun.

Sounds like Derick needs a GRM computer repair job out in Washington to pay for his plane flight to be a wingman.

I see exactly ZERO things wrong with the plan hiding in this post. What are you waiting for? Its game time!

I am all good for new stories and adventures but ship that Mother! One major break down and you will end up shipping it anyway along with air fare, lost income blah, blah, blah. Sit back, have a beer and relax and wait for it to come to you and then be thankful you listened to me. You probably will have saved yourself some money in the long run. Oh ya by the way. Cool truck.

hmmm, looks like I need to raise some cash in the next couple of weeks, and just have a backup fund incase the worst happens. The PO is quite confident it will make the drive. SWMBO will prob have the last word on this one, but this is something I've wanted to do for a loooooooong time. The googles say 2 days and 1 hour drive time, My dad and I went from South Carolina to N. Cali in 3 days when I was a teenager, but that was pretty much driving all day trying to make time. I just remember Texas and New Mexico seeming to take forever to get through, and it was FLAT! Seeing signs that read last gas for 2xx or 3xx miles was rather amusing though.

Do it. If I could still find it on the archived GRM forum site, I'd link you to the story of my friend and I flying to Utah and driving home in my unrestored '69 SAAB 96V4 DeLuxe.

We still talk about the trip most everytime we're together, and it's one of the highlights of my life.

Do it.

What about the 'GRM Express'? Find nice people on the forum that will drive it the next leg of the journey to get it closer to you.

In reply to integraguy:

If it needs nothing other than a pair of fenders and a respray to be straight, it would still go for 2-3k around here. These good ole boys around me love their little jap trucks. ESPECIALLY the little 4x4 ones, I saw one a year ago or so, that had one side of the bed demolished, and rust was everywhere the guy selling it still got 1600 out of it. I couldn't believe it, and wouldn't believe it if the guy hadn't shown me the 16 $100 bills.

A 1k truck around here gets you one beat dog, that some dad bought his kid to play with and they beat it around the property or at the hunting camp. This one looks well used to me, but loved not beat.

We snagged a 500$ b2200 a few years back, dropped another 300 or so into it to make it into something decent for my wife to drive till we could find her something else, it lasted 3 or 4 months till it died out of no where.

Fly and Drive, if you can manage.

I'll second Spin ^^ there. I've seen 'em go for 2k-3k around here. People here love it if it'll run forever, and that breed Toyota truck will.
