For the record, it wasn't me who said a roller would go for $2K (not that I doubt it is completely true for the member who posted it)...
...But a no title, beat up, mostly complete parts car could fetch $1,200-$1,500 here...or so it seems.
A running, will-pass-inspection, drivable example is not to be found for under $3K, I'm relatively certain.
And the "cheap" ones I find always seem to have an edelbrock carburetor stuck on them in place of the fuel injection...WTF?!

Honestly...
Im going to go 3.8 v6 camaro on this one, by far..
You can get it cheap, the motor's super solid and has great power compared to some in that list (low 15s stock with 5spd iirc), the car is fairly easy to work on, the drivetrain and suspension bits are pretty sturdy, used aftermarket parts are plentiful and cheap, and it wont completely crumple up when you toss it into a wall.
Id also like to add that people talking about SVO mustangs should get serious about the practicality of that for $2k and realize that you can turbo an 85hp 2.3 mustang with factory parts from more plentiful thunderbird turbo coupes and bolt on cheap, plentiful suspension bits to get the same result for less money and no risk of trashing a rare car.
Also, a sohc 3.0 3k gt stripped to the bone is a perfectly fun, decently reliable automobile.. and comparing a 3000gt to a 3rd gen f-body is just nuts to me. One feels like a rolling tool shed with all the tools falling off their pegs, and the other one is a perfectly decent car whose biggest failing is being the same weight as the camaro and having a crowded engine bay (UNLESS its sohc.. those are roomy!).

I don't think you can get an SVO 'stang for under 2k.
The SVO was not a 302, it was a 2.3 turbo.
This is ironic...I spent a couple hours last night on craigslist looking for BMWs, specifically the E30 318's, but any BMW that looked interesting anywhere within about a thousand miles of eastern Montana. Looking for Challenge fodder, and maybe a fun DailyDriver-sort.
Found a bunch, with the lowest price about US$200, and a lot of them in the $500-1700 range. Mileage didn't seem to be much of a reason for price, and the 'best' one, in my mind anyway, was only a couple hundred miles away, with 165K on it, for $500 obo. I think if you're willing to get hands dirty doing the work yourself, craigslist is a good place to start. LOTS of stuff out there, and some of it's even pretty good.
ok. gig is up. this weekend he purchased a 1985 e28. he got it for $1K with an extra transmission and engine thrown in. it needs shifter work, some new seats, a brake job, and a good stripping to remove the funky interior smell, but otherwise seemed to be in good working order.
