As a rule the land trains are limited to only two trailers in urban or urbanish areas. Three in sligtly more outlying areas, then once in the wide open, as many as they want.
I've seen footage of a triple trailer backing up. They only back up in a straight line. And, yes, they do have the right of way in the outback. (Although who would want to argue with one??)
