Local dealer has a 06 Pontiac GTO with 6.0 and 6 spd . They want stupid money of course, but I"m just curious if anyone has ever tried to track one? What would be the auto x class? Edmunds says retail $15K and Priv $13.8 I'm always a sucker for an odd ball..

a 6.0/6 speed GTO is a good way to get a Camaro with slightly less power for 1/3 the money..

the GTO has a few things that don't look right on it, too.. like the rear wheelwells being so damn small and goofy looking.. and let's be honest here- the stock GTO 17" wheels look small on the car..

but other than that and the fly by wire OBD2 ecm, there is nothing to not love about the 05 and 06 GTO's..

Buy one, then go to These guys to get everything to make it back into an Ozzie Holden Monaro.

The local GM dealer got a 2004 very late in the model year, 5.7 automatic. It sat on their lot for damn near six years, moved between a couple of their lots, and it finally went away. Had just over 1000 miles, a brand new, six year old car. Nobody wanted it, everyone wanted the LS2, I felt sorry for the poor car. I wanted to rescue it.

I still think of that car when I drive by.

think of the fun when you get pulled over and the cop can't figure out what the hell a "Holden" is or why the plates come back as belonging on a Pontiac GTO....

I had an '04, never understood why it was so much less loved than the '05-'06. Mine was heavily modified, but it was awesome. Wish I hadn't sold it.

As for tracking them, I never tracked mine. But I know that brakes were a weak point. '05-'06 had better brakes, but they still weren't fantastic. If you're just doing autox, you'd probably be fine, but for HPDE you may want to upgrade. Steering is light, but still isn't terrible.

In reply to Klayfish:

Because the 04 only had 350hp/365tq, flat hood and no split dual exhaust

I ABSOLUTELY loved my 04 Black on Black. I still miss it

Take 04 GTO, add 05/06 calipers, good rubber, lightweight skid plate (that thing is heavy), E/C/I/T and hoon all day . . . and still have change left over from not buying an 05/06 model.

Now if you can find a non-ragged 05/06 for $12-13K . . . . you need to buy it. I keep missing the $8K-10K 04s that pop up ever so often . . . damnit

No doubt about it, that's why they're worth less, but I had the same thoughts as you. The aftermarket for the 5.7 is huge and cheap, brakes are an easy fix.

I bought my '04 for the price of a stock '06. Already all tricked out. 390hp at the wheels, better rear end gear, suspension mods galore, upgraded tires, etc... Only thing it didn't have upgraded was the brakes...go figure.

I wish I still had my 04. It was a great car.

Stock GTO's are in FS for SCCA autox. Modified cars will fall into STU or (I think) ESP. The rules don't say GTO's are in ESP specifically but that's where the Mustangs and Camaros are.

For the brakes, the 05/06 ones bolt right on to the 04's. They are PBR calipers (which are very good). You just need better pads, SS hoses, and good fluid.

And yeah, people have finally figure out that the GTO is over 500Lbs lighter than the Camaro and can whip all of the new pony cars for 1/3 the money, so they are starting to increase in value. Damn things will be worth serious bucks sooner or later.

I have seen a few of these sub $10K '04's as well. Plenty for under $12K if you look a little farther.

What all was different between the '04's vs. the '05/'06?

I know people love the 6.0, but how much difference are we actually talking?

Clean looking (other than hood) '04 for $10K http://houston.craigslist.org/cto/2774774664.html

04's had the 5.7L LS1 with a throttle cable, smaller brakes, dual exhaust with a 1-sided exit, flat hood, and some unique paint colors (Barbados Blue, some Red I can't remember right now) and color/interior (Cosmos Purple).

05/06 got the bigger bore "Gen IV" LS2 with drive-by-wire, bigger brakes, a "traditional" dual exhaust, and the scooped hood (though you could still order the flat one).

06's got some funky smoked Altezza taillights, and some different paint (Spice Red, some Orange color).
