Ratchet with a lock out.

700R4 isn't a bad tranny. Hell even a 200R4 can be a 1000hp handling unit.

Ratchets are awesome for any use. There's no reason to not use a ratchet if you can get one for your trans.

drag race or road/autocross? I'd suggest trying to find someone with each type of shifter to try out in person. It is really personal preference. I am assuming by gated you mean something like the Hurst Quarter stick or B&M Pro Stick. I prefer the Hurst quarterstick style myself, as the ratcheting can get a bit old sometimes, especially with a reverse valve body.

For road race or autocross the ratcheting may be easier to operate.
