Before the current offering from FF, the Smyth was set to change the Kit car world.
Does anyone remember or care anymore?

I remember it, it's something I'd cross-shop with an 818 kit if I was ready to purchase one (I'd definitely go with a gas engine though) but with the 818 nearing completion and this in development it's understandable that the 818 is getting all the attention right now...
Rather cool. That's kinda why I was checking out the rumors of a 2 wire hook of a TDI engine a short time ago.
Follow him/them on Facebook, if you're so inclined. Updates on the G3F come frequently, and Mark has lots of great insight about business in general.
Beta kits are out, several are complete with many more in process, and they're finalizing production bodywork. Quite enticing really.
As a very up-to-the-minute update, I saw my good friend today who is beta builder #1 of the G3F. He is go-karting it at this point, and the next step is the body, once Mark finalizes it. He is quite excited about the progress and should have the car streetable soon!

I've been following him on Facebook for the past few months. Updates are frequent, and pictures are many.
Here's the big limiting factor I see with his approach, you are limited to a very select group of donor vehicles AND he's kept the most unreliable piece of VW architecture - everything but the engine.
I do think it's cool in it's own way and will net you a much better DD with all the creature comforts, that is if they don't break off in your hand, fall off on the road behind, don't let all the smoke leak out & will work semi consistently.
As you can see, my experience with VW/Audi's has been a little on the frustrating side. Once I stopped alongside the road and helped put out the fires on 2 different VW Beetles with a few month period.
I haven't put out a car fire since and the last one prior to that time was the rash of GM carbuerated mid sized cars that seemed to litter the highways for years. They were so common that when the fire trucks arrived they'd tell you what was going to blow next and about how long it would take. I lost money to a couple of fire fighters before I got wise. After they took my money they said they saw a couple of these a week. There was a common leak where the gas line entered the carb and no one ever took the time to tighten it.
BTW it's worth finding his Facebook page if for nothing else than to find these seats!
