So I bought a swing-away spare tire carrier/rear bumper for the Grand Cherokee. The builder delivered it naked as a newborn baby. I figure bedliner is the best thing to coat it with.  So......

Would you use roll on or spray on bedliner?

What brand do you recommend (for or against) based on your experience?

Do I need to prime the bare metal before the bedliner?

I used some roll-on bedliner that I bought at O'Reilley's.  I used it to coat the outside of the gas tanks on my Esprit (RIP).  I think that stuff worked well.  One can should do it for your bumper.  I don't think you need to prime it, but certainly de-grease it.

Its not a very big piece and since it’s raw steel, I’d have it powder coated or Line-X’d. The Line-X stuff is amazing! Wouldn’t be very expensive but more than a can or jar of DIY bedliner.

The spray stuff is garbage. The stuff that is not activated is garbage.

This is one of those things I would send out for powdercoat for a few bucks or drop off at the line-X guys down the street and slip them 40$ to do it with leftover mixed material they have from a larger job.

My poor mans solution that I used on the new h2 bumpers was to prep prime and paint. Then smooth surfaced rubberized undercoating and a top coat of the finish color.  This has worked exceptionally well for the last 5 years.

Do this!

Do not use the DIY garbage.  I’ve tried 4 different autopepzonerileys products over the years and they are 100% disappointing.  In this case, pay the man.

Agree with getting done by the pros if you're going bedliner.

For the racks and stuff I've fabbed up I primed them and gave them 2 coats of brush on black rustoleum. Held up pretty well and it was easy to touch up when it did get bashed.

Interesting that people are saying to pay a pro.

I've always heard good things about U-pol Raptor liner, I've been planning on getting some myself to do the lower 12" or so of my truck.

Can't believe I'm the first to suggest that you don't get it on your hootus.

I did my Cherokee floors with Herculiner. It has held up really well in the cargo area and the footwells. It's not too bad to apply and only slightly terrible to clean up. Wear gloves.

I used Raptor liner on my Cherokee's floors and give it a hearty endorsement.
