Maybe I've missed it, but has there ever been a comparison between sub-$5000 4 door cars? The kind of cars we drive 'cause we have jobs and kids and wives and groceries.

I see it being some sort of Volvo vs. P71 vs. SAAB vs. Maxima vs. e36 ad-nauseum comparison.

I remember one from a while ago that included something like E28 vs ACR vs Milano. Maybe there was a Saturn in there, I can't remember. It was before the current format, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't old enough to be a stapled issue. I'll pull it out next time I am at the bookshelf.

GRM isn't really doing that kind of article anymore. They are out racing and hosting events and driving the big-dollar cars now.

GRM did an article some time back that tested "affordable" cars that could also be competitive on the track. Perhaps they will see this thread and get "inspired" to try another sedan comparo, tho it will probably have to have a higher price threshold.

That's a great idea, I already did the reader's survey or I'd add that to it.

Another nice thing to see would be a re-do of the $5k/$10k/$15k article from about 2001 or 2002. The premise was what to buy for autox, road race, etc. if you had budgets of 5/10/15k. IIRC, they had a feature car in each category/price and a couple of other ideas mentioned but not discussed in detail.

..which is remarkably similar to the recent 'budget dreamcar equivalents' article from a few months ago.

While GRM has slid up the scale a little, I don't think it's fair to say they've gone all big-bucks.

P71 is the VIN Code for a true Crown Victoria Police Interceptor (also known as a CVPI).

It is a P-40, the plane that saved the Chinese from the Japanese. It hardly if ever fought in the European theatre.

I assume of course he was referring to a P-51.

On an obligatory car note, there used to be a guy with a Foxbody Mustang GT convertible around here with the license plate REDP51.

Flying Tigers anyone?

You're both right! I meant the P51 and that is a P40. I should've looked for the underslung radiator scoop. I was too fast on the posting and not sharp enough on the editting.

VIN Code

Regular 'Vics are P73, Fleet cars are P72, Interceptors are P71. That's how you get the good stuff at a police auction without crawling all over the car.

I think there is also a more robust alternator, some frame reinforcement, and the vinyl back seat.
