Anyone have experience shipping engines or transmissions?  Ideas on cost/lb or size?  Viable carriers, etc.?

Someone here said that Fastenal is a reasonable priced route for shipping if you can get the engine strapped to a pallet.

No personal expereince but seems interesting.

Put it in a tire, strap it to a pallet, go to freightquote.com.

In reply to John Welsh :

I believe Fastenal doesnt allow engines. They have us a hard time about a pinball machine because electronics was on their bad list.

i shipped an engine and trans through Fastenal around February-ish earlier this year and they had no problem, they just say to drain oil (i didnt even do that) and make sure it's strapped down well to a pallet.  it was $200 to go from Columbus, IN to a suburb of Atlanta. I loaded into the back of my truck at my house and the Fastenal store i dropped it off at to be shipped out was able to use the forklift to get it out of the truck for me. It couldnt have been much easier or cheaper.

Pretty much any shipper will want the engine empty of fluids.

Forward Air has shipping containers designed for motorcycles, but they'd work for an engine as well.  https://www.forwardair.com/forwardair/prepaid/MCmainpage.jsp
