If thats a sponsorship ill tell you what:

My band will sponsor your race car. You have to buy $250 worth of merch but ill give you a 25% discount on it. You have to mention my band in every form of communication, Facebook posts, forum posts, every text message and every time you talk ("Do you want paper or plastic?" "My god do i ever love Interstellar Sledgehammer! Paper please." Do you want fries with that?" "Have i told you about Interstellar Sledgehammer? And yes to the fries")  Also you must forsake all other music.

I eagerly await your response lol

Your facebook page has 17 followers. So why don't you send me a 9" long (or so) die-cut sticker of your band name/logo and I'll put it right on the roof of the rally car next to the In Flames and Children of Bodom stickers I stuck there just for the hell of it.

I will definitely get your page up to 20 followers within a week.

\m/ your logo looks pretty cool \m/

Reminds me, your car should really be at the DC Auto show, but I believe that it's too late to get it in at this point.

It was there like 5 years ago! But I know SCCA wants all the car owners to spend like an entire day or two there promoting SCCA and standing by the cars. I really just don't have time for that these days...Also I'm always working on the car in the winter!

And I was rocking my GRM shirt :)

These "25% off and run our sticker" discount programs have become more and more prevalent. It's an easy way to deal with all the "will you sponser me, everyone will love my car when its done" noise that all vendors get. A few years ago I posted a great article discussing it, but I'll let someone else dig it out again if they're interested.

Hell, that's a "program?"

Over my years of racing (primarily rally/rallycross) when I want to order a part from a smaller vendor or specialty vendor, I'll usually shoot them an email first just straight-up saying that I'd be happy to throw some stickers on the car and on the trailer in exchange for whatever discount they feel like giving (on parts that i was gonna pay full-price for anyhow). I usually just mention to check out my build thread (about 500,000 views between the one here and the one in the BMW forum). The vendor almost always gives me some kind of deal on whatever I'm ordering....5%, 10%, 25%, sometime more. I throw some of their stickers on the car, tag them in some social media posts here and there just as a "thanks" and that's it. The guy who made my skidplate has gotten a dozen orders from local e30 rallycrossers alone just from them seeing my car. Hell, ARB (the offroad company) hooked me up with some free replacement parts when I basically destroyed my awning on the tow rig in a wind storm just for telling them that the truck towed a race car. I don't push, but I'll certainly ask. Only thing it costs me is a couple minutes to put a couple stickers on the car. My one "real" sponsor started that way, and since I've gotten a lot of others into his products, now he gives me free or heavily discounted stuff when I need it - though I don't ask often.

I don't bother asking with larger distributors (i.e. the eEuroparts, or FCP, or the ones who do "discount/sponsorship" deals), since they have written requirements, etc. But for smaller companies who aren't well known, sure, why not. I like stickers, and if I get them a couple future sales I suppose it's worth it.

It's the difference between "looking for sponsors" and just taking a minute to see if me and a manufacturer can do a quick, mutually-beneficial transaction that doesn't cost either of us anything but could help both of us.

It helps that I'm not doing stupid E36 M3, that I'm fairly well known in the rally/rallycross community on this coast, and that I'm known as a big supporter of the e30 scene who shares/writes about products I like.

Hell, I have a Flyin' Miata sticker on my toolchest. I don't even own a Miata, and never have :)

The Redline program is simply a big company putting what you’re doing in writing. A few social media posts, stickers and you get a bit of a cut. Because they’re big enough that they can’t just make it up on the fly, they have to come up with a proper description and terms. But really, it’s just “tell you what, if you order $250 worth of stuff we’ll give you wholesale pricing and ship it for free if you tell people to use our stuff”.

That does cost the manufacturer something - they’re discounting their prices and taking a pay cut with the expectation that their support of you will benefit them.

For every guy like you - able to spend money, a reasonable public profile and with the right attitude - there are a dozen kids who are planning to be Instagram stars as soon as their car is done, and they’ll totally tell all their friends that your stuff is the bomb and they’ll be at all the car shows and even visit the SEMA if their buddy can hook them up with shirts. That’s the reason the programs exist.

You may be right. I am not knowledgeable about auto parts markups, so 25% may equal wholesale pricing.

But I AM knowledgeable about chemical markups, and 25% wouldn’t come close. Trust me on this.

So maybe yes, maybe no.

Here’s what I do know... 25% doesn’t hurt. It’s not a gift of any kind. Redline isn’t in need of $62.50. I understand deals like this are now common, but it’s a bit of an insult to call it a sponsorship.

Sounds like a generic "yes" to every sponsorship request so they can pretend they aren't saying no.

Sponsorship equivalent of the "berkeley off price." If you actually take it, they'll laugh all the way to the bank.

You know....

If you took the offer from this "automotive lubricant" company and changed it to a company that specialized in "social lubricant" instead (read: beer), I would have absolutely no problem abiding by those rules to get that sponsorship package

My source: we’ve been a Redline dealer for decades. I know what wholesale actually is in this case :) Note that I m talking about dealer cost, not overall profit margin from the drill head to the store shelving.

Most people can’t even spell sponsorship anymore - it’s probably second only to Camero in terms of mangled language. If you’re approaching a company for free stuff and you feel you have something to offer in return, use the term “partnership”. That’s closer to what you actually want anyhow. And make it worth their while. They don’t have to give you a discount, but you need their stuff.

So what is the minimum you would expect to have to do for 25% off some of your consumables? What would be reasonable?

I'd put an Interstellar Sledgehammer sticker on my toolbox because it's an awesome band name. Shoot me the file, I can cut it myself so you don't have to spend any money.

I promise to educate myself about the band (ie, listen to music and keep my eyes open for Colorado tour dates) and share this information with anyone I can trap in the shop.

Last year I had pretty much the identical partnership agreement with Redline. As your first offer perhaps this seems like a lot of work but it's about par for the course from what I've experienced. When you have 4-5 companies help supporting your program it's a bit less work because you're already making posts for one company so to tag another company isn't much/any extra work.

The difference between your situation and mine is that I absolutely use $250 in fluids per year between 2-3 oil changes, enough fluid for 2-3 complete brake flushes and a bit of new fluid each event. Plus a trans/diff flush and then enough spare fluid to do another flush of each (I like to have enough fluid on hand to do a complete flush of any system on the car if needed, it's cheaper to carry around fluid than it is not get to finish a weekend)

Plus, I was already buying redline for the car at full price + shipping anyway. A discount on something I would buy at full price just sweetens the pot.

Another thing to note, the deal doesn't limit what types of fluids you can buy. At the discounted price redline becomes about the same price as the typical fluids I run our daily drivers so I switched those over to redline as well simply to support a company that's supporting me.

In addition to filling out redline sponsorship form I also wrote them a letter describing who I was, what my car is, competition history, goals, future plans etc etc. oh and pictures of course.

Thinking about it I would have agreed if it didnt have the $250 minimum,  I can change all the fluids to redline including shock oil in my car 2 to 3 times for about $150 and if I use cheaper stuff it would be about a 1/3 of that. Thats why I run a tiny Japanese car lol
