Last week the star aligned and a business trip had me near Midland, Texas on the afternoon that Jim Hall was scheduled to take the Chaparral 2E out for some exercise at the Permian Basin Petroleum Museum. It pays to get on the email alert list!

Before the event, I drove out to the Chaparral Cars compound south of town. Chaparral Cars Office

I got to the museum in time to walk through the Chaparral wing where the other cars are kept, then go to the garage where the 2E was ready.
Chaparral 2E

Museum staff, the mechanics, and enthusiasts were chatting and taking photos when Jim Hall drove up. He was very friendly and accommodating, standing for quite a few photos with whoever asked. He mingled, talked with everyone, answered questions, and told good stories in a very informal atmosphere. I enjoyed his story of testing Corvair stability for Chevrolet.

He said that the 2E was his favorite, because it was predictable. They did have reliability issues with it – apparently bumps caused more stress on the wing supports than they anticipated, among other things. It was good to get up close to a car like that without a proximity alarm going off.

Unfortunately, rain moved in and got the museum road too wet to risk the car. Hall asked if the 2E had rain tires fitted – and it did! I suggested firing up the 2J “sucker car” so somehow dry off the road, even volunteering to drive. They declined. Eventually, the drive was moved to the next day, when I couldn’t be there. Shoot.

Oh, yeah, they had a neat pit bike, too, complete with light-up eyes and an air-powered snot slinger. Pit bike If you're anywhere near Midland, check out the museum.

I officially hate you now. That Chaparral is incredible! And the pit bike reminds me of the Boss Hong, minus the flames but plus the mucus. Ewww...

That's a cool story SL. My grandparents used to race with Jim Hall when they lived in Texas WAY back in the day. I would like to visit his shop in Midland with them someday...

Here's Jim taking the 2F (Winner, Brands Hatch `67) from the shop on his way to the museum.

The stories I heard back when I was a corner worker said that Jim really didn't realize how well history regarded his work. Those cars sat at the shop gathering dust for years while he was amused that anyone cared. Seems he finally "got it" while Falconer & Nye were grilling him for their book.

My childhood hero. It was tough enough being a sports car fan in the South in those days (my dad treated me like I'd joined the band instead of playing football)..and knowing the little team from Texas could scare `em in Europe really helped. I had a COX 1/24th scale 2E, and carried it around like it was Excalibur...I was a pretty good slot racer back then.

If I had money, I think I'd have them build me a real one..

Parked next to a pickup truck. Even among us Southerners, we consider Texans a little...different.
Now here come all my Texan cousins to tell me I'm jus' jealous.

A lot of my photos didn't come out well that day. I brought a camera that is much better for outside shots, the light was bad, I had a setting wrong ... I have plenty of excuses for my incompetence!

Hey! I found something!

I was actually looking for the Riverside race, since they did a little better there, but this'll have to do until I get all my racing vids transferred to DVD.
