I've driven some slow cars in the past and my main concern is reliability/economical stuff. I'm stuck into the overlanding/offroading hype and I want something that'll take me there and get me back without blowing up.

2.0 is fine.
Just check and top up the oil more often than never, which seems to be what kills them. The low friction rings get stuck easily and the engine starts burning oil.
Heck, if you get a 2.0, you'll have more opportunity to use WOT and keep the rings moving in their grooves...
