Maybe not the best video, but I love the Alfa Romeo V6 in the 75/Milano.

And perhaps it's just because I want one really badly, but I really like the sound of MkII MR2 Turbos with a good exhaust.

i'm partial to a high winding 355" small block Chevy that's pushing around 400 hp running thru a 2.5" X pipe and Flowmaster mufflers, myself..

that was my Nova, and hitting 7000rpm in anger at the top of 1st and 2nd gears was just pure heaven both inside the car and outside as it passed by..

I remember Hans Stuck pitching a BMW 3.0 CSL around Road America in 1975 (?) and it made the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

Shell made a commercial a few years ago with various Ferrari F1 cars. The third car (I think) circa 1970 had the best sound.

Does a Rolls Royce Merlin count?

Does anyone have video of Wheels777's $2006 Challenge 260Z? That thing sounded freakin' FANTASTIC. 180 degree 'basket of snakes' header with a single 4" pipe out the back... it will make the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

Have you ever seen one in person? I spent the summer of '91 in western Japan. About three weeks after Le Mans a friend invited me to this race. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnypFFEWAIs&feature=results_main&playnext=1&list=PL61E8B0C7D3C8FAC6

There were 2 Mazda 787's running. I can only describe them as LOUD!!! Painfully loud. Whenever one of the Mazdas got with in an eighth of a mile, everyone was plugging their ears. Unlike a lot of race engines that produce sound waves at frequencies the you feel as much as hear. The B26 at full song seems to focus all it's exhaust energy right in the center of the spectrum for human hearing. I think it is one of the loudest, non-aircraft, man made noises I have ever head.

This. The P-51 variety. Hands down for me.

Second would be a couple of supercharged Allisons in a P-38.

X2. I used to work next to Van Nuys airport and occasionally the local P-51 club would form a wing and do some low elevation 400 MPH passes

There is not a large enough font to express my OMG!

Also, practically any Ferrari. I used to draft them just for the sound track with my Stalker. Then I'd pass, of course

And I also dig rotaries, but I guess that they're like opera. Heavenly to some. Screeching to others.

Well if you are going to bring aircraft into it, the big radials trump the Merlins in my book.

For automobiles, the Ferrari V-12 is supreme.

More down to earth, I love the sound of a Healy 3000.

i'm partial to 6's myself. inline, flat, vee, i don't much care. they seem to hit a sweet spot in my ears between the raw-beef punch in the chest that big displacement V8's bring and the screaming timbre of a tightly wound 4.

nothing like a little race-prepped EG33 to set my loins aflame http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqnuj58lFQI

old Z's sound better than they have any right to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSYh69ea-x8&feature=related

i remember being in high school when the SVT contour came out and being totally blown away by the noise they made in stock form http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xc6Ikwq8Pj8

i dig the noise pretty much any exotic makes, but that's kinda to-be-expected. i'd say for a regular guy like me, a termi cobra is probably the meanest sounding big-power engine i'd ever get my hands on.

Best sounding engine -

Hayabusa ( in a sports car ) going through the gears - with a flatshifter!

Reminds me of the split screen engine scenes in the movie Gran Prix every time I drive it.

I always enjoyed that sound at the end of the straight. Dirt track or Lime Rock.

I followed an M6 with the V10 and no mufflers.. (kid hacked them off and replaced with straight pipes... uncorked the V10 sounds aweful.. and will cause your ears to bleed at High RPMs.. even from several hundred feet away. The owner of said M6 would come up behind cars on the highway and just rev the piss out of the engine to get the other cars out of his way..

I agree that the 305 Ford sounds great.. one of the best sounding V8s out there.

I submit the 2.0 V6 in the Lancia Stratos. Really a Ferrari Designed engine built by Fiat.

This, no further discussion needed-unless its for "second best sounding engine"

Yeah, that's the one! I tried, but I can't find a better clip. Found some stuff of old 312s being warmed up, but they're all phone videos and the sound stinks.
