Does anybody really need 518 horsepower and a big rear wing that sits higher than the roof to go to Piggly Wiggly and back? Not really, but that hasn’t stopped Porsche from pushing the GT3 envelope even further by introducing the 911 GT3 RS.

More powerful than the “standard” GT3 by 16 more horsepower, the GT3 RS comes powered by …

A car that's beyond my wildest needs or aspirations but... For some reason it makes me happy that it's still naturally aspirated.

I tried my best to highlight the most important tech fitted to the car, but Porsche really went all-out with this one.

Here's the full press release if you really want to read more about the GT3 RS:

Such awesome cars. If I ever get one, the vanity plate will read "PWRBALL" because that is where I got the cash :-)

If I won the lottery, this is the car I'd buy.  Although in a 100% ideal world, this would  be offered with a manual.  I think the non-RS version may come with a stick?

Gonna be a lot of Montana license plates on these things.

I've driven an earlier one on track and at that time made the comment

"sell your house live under the freeway but do whatever you have to to get one"

They are that good.

I was at the 2019 Virginia City Hillclimb and a Porsche GT2 RS showed up. It was an unbeatable combination of this car and a very good pilot, setting a new course record, previously held by a Ferrari F40 on race tires. It was, and is, as the Brits say, "a serious bit of kit."

Savage machine!

Also, it's crazy that actual cars from real car companies are starting to look more and more like khyzhl saleem renderings:

Ok then. Not identical, just saying that the trend is heading that way. I see scoops and fins and huge wings and widened arches and aero components that aren't body colored on both the actual Porsche and the renderings. It's pretty aggressive by Porsche standards.

In reply to STM317 :

Yes, but I'm going to give him and people like him zero credit for that. Porsche does things because they work, not because of how they look. Even companies like Lamborghini doesn't do frivolous vents and wings anymore. Aero is becoming a bigger and bigger part of factory performance; but it's chasing lap times, not Instagram renderings.

Not that I have any reason to doubt Porsches numbers. But they say that 85% of all the GT3 RS end up being purchased by people who will track them.

Not sure where they get that number but I have a hard time understanding how the ven diagram of people who can afford a RS and people who can actually drive a RS in a enjoyable fashion at a track is big enough to support that.

I'm sure that number could be further divided into the people that drive them on track at a Porsche Experience Center/Porsche days at other tracks and those that are more serious using the cars regularly with PCA etc. where the car is mainly used for that purpose. There always seems to be a number of them anytime I am running with BMW CCA or even at our local tracks for some open lapping.

I wonder how many people buy a GT3RS because they are already seriously into track stuff and it's one of the best tools for the job, as opposed to someone buying one and later deciding "hey I have a fast car, maybe I'll try a track day."

Agreed. It just I live in La La land where RS's and Hurrican STO's and Evo's are pretty common and they never ever get used on the track. In the Viper ACR world I would bet money that 85% of the cars see the track and 70% of them see open passing days. Quite a few get cut up and turned into full comp cars.

But at the end of the day almost every single one of the hard core track guys ended up with Comp coupe vipers as they are a better for actually maintaining and using on the track. There are a bunch of used 911 RSR and cup cars out there for sale with no cost premium to buy.

110K for something like this makes sense for track use. The markup on a RS right now is over 100K allegedly.

Low miles too!

Two years ago there were a pair of GT2 RS that were trailered in running with BMW CCA at Mosport, last year it seemed like those cars were replaced with used Cup cars. Makes perfect sense to me, there's probably even a supply of decent lightly used tires for them too.

I waited a few days to post thinking on this.

The thing has just gone past my realm of fun, I guess. To much electronic wizardly stuff for me. Four button/knobs on the steering wheel? Sure for a race car.

I get the the large percentage of buyers will primarily track these and will likely love it.

While I absolutely love the marque, it does not pain me that I cannot afford one of these. Kind of a "meh, neat."

I think my limit with newer Porsches is a 6spd GT4. PDK does nothing for me. I don't care that it shifts fast et. al. Forget about "adjustable torque vectoring" and all of that other "cheater" crap.

Let me row the gears.

Hell, it pains me that I have to hit a button in my sports car to make it more sporty every time I get in it. My Cayman should be set up that I have to turn that off if I want the smoother ride. I did not buy the damn thing comfortably cruise around town. I bought it to knock our collective dick off in the mountains and canyons. Let me taste seat leather when I push my limit too far in the thing.

Don't get me wrong, I love the new GT3 RS, it just not tick many of my boxes.

So yeah Porsche is doing the Ferrari thing again on the RS and the standard GT3.

Local friend has been on the GT3 list for a while, has had a ton of Porsche's and was told he could get one at a bit of a markup.

Now availability only too "loyal Porsche owners" was the line. I guess the 911 Turbo he has is not "loyal" enough. This is coming from a guy who has a 06 Ford GT and actually drives it 6K miles a year and is the perfect owner for a GT3 or RS and will actually use the car.

Porsche just build enough of them +1 for all the buyers and be done with it. Nobody except people already on the Porsche "list" is going to see one of these things ever.

This was my thaught as well.  A cool car for sure but it hits the 1 percent market. More of an engineering test bed is how I look at these halo cars. I think is a better way to see them. In ten years I bet a lot of the technology in that car will be on the regular cars.   Most manufactures do this.

His point was the used Cup car is a better value than a new GT3RS (at more than 2x the price of the Cup car) if you're actually going to track it.

I'm acquainted with a lot of our local PCA folks, and run a couple of PCA events a year.  There are definitely people who track these, and I know one couple that bought one last year and immediately mounted race rubber and took it to the track.  The vast majority, though, will never see the track.  Of the 20 or so local PCA folks, only three track their cars, and none of them are GT cars.  One 911 Carerra, one 914 track car and one BMW track car.  The GT3, GT4 and GT3RS in the group have never been on track.

These cars only make sense in terms of the owner's needs.  The following gross stereotypes are attempted to be humorous but may not be far from the mark.

Type A Driver: Retired almost without exception, usually from a professional job.  Some are one percenters, many are not.  They have managed their money well their entire lives and know that they can't take it with them when they go.  You have to put the cash somewhere, and a GT3 RS is only an extravagance if you believe that they'll go down in value substantially in the future.  Simply owning the car, seeing it in their garage and BS'ing about it with their friends is a goal unto itself, the cars and coffee crowd.  Some of them back into PCA autocross or track days, but they're late to the game as a novice and they don't want to mess up their car so they go mainly for the t-shirt and sticker.

Type B Driver: Has some money but not necessarily wealthy.  Probably middle aged, still working hard. Been a serious car person their whole life and have some experience on the track; advanced group HPDE, or may have even done some competitive racing when they were younger.  Due to burnout or time constraints they don't want to race competitively, but cars are still their main hobby and passion.  They scratch and claw and sacrifice to buy a GT3 as probably the best mixed purpose street/track tool ever made.  They only have time to do track days 3-4 times a year, so running costs are less of an issue.

Type C Driver: Absolutely obsessive about motorsports.  Trying to improve their driving skills as much as possible, which means pushing the car to its limits frequently and getting tons of seat time.  Understand that the car is just a tool to do a job, and that a GT3 is the wrong tool unless you have metric tons of cash and can tolerate rapid depreciation of a very valuable object.  Understands that you can turn faster laps and learn more in a different tool that costs 1/10 as much, doesn't give a berk what other people think of their cars.

I tend to be more of a Type C driver, and I think there are others on this thread.  I'm glad cars like the GT3 RS exist but they don't work for my use case.

We have 3-4 of these at every PCA event I attend. I nearly shate me-self when I heard one of the owners say he takes care of the engine becuase it costs 60K.
