It's been 10 years since I had my DSM's, but WTF happened?

$2800 of "running" TSi

$2500 of "running" GSX

Unless they are mechanically in good shape I would not go more than $1500. The paint on both is really killing the perceived value of those.

I need to get one of those before they are all gone. I have wanted the AWD turbo one for a long time. I always thought it was the perfect NE car. I have been told that the transmissions are the week point in those. Considering my luck with 944 transmissions as of late they can not be much worse.

Until someone pays $2500 for one, they're not $2500 cars

I think David B up in NH still has Scott's old Talon. I bet you could get it cheap.

I should talk to David. I have not heard from him in a long time. Speaking of that we should do a MARX7 gathering this year. Nothing big but it would be neet to get the old group together to see what we are driving now. LOL

For cheap cars you gotta go to Cali. People here in the Pacific NW have insane ideas about what their worn-out crap is worth.

Besides how can you think about a DSM when this is in Oregon: http://monterey.craigslist.org/cto/2963278829.html (brand new never assembled Formula Vee/SuperVee with spares for $1500).

I was under the impression the trans were a weak point because of clutch dropping 19 year olds?

Heh... living within an hour of a certain tuner shop that specialized in DSMs meant that an AWD model with a blown engine would still go for $2500. Seems that all of the cheap ones would get snapped up pronto.

Paint? Who cares about paint? You can fix paint.

I thought the trans was the weak point because they were geared so absurdly ridiculously tall... Really now, looking at the gear ratios, I was shocked, looks like 3rd gear is taller than my VW's 5th.

When I saw that, I stopped caring about DSMs altogether. Poking around, I could put together complete AWD drivelines fairly inexpensively, but why bother when they're geared so bad?

It's not just DSMs, I'm looking for a cheap car for my step-son, and so far have found a beat to crap '01 Focus with 150kmi for $3k, '03 Cavalier with a rebuil title and 130kmi for $3300, and a '97 Aspire with 170kmi for $2200 - but it sold before I could get there!

I think all the cool stuff for cheap prices have mostly dried up

I get leads on cheap non-running BMWs (people love popping head gaskets and cracking the cylinder heads), here's two them:

93 525it w/ 140K, popped gasket, possible cracked head, new water pump and radiator, normal dings and dents, need brakes and tires . . . $1500

92 525it w/ 105K, timing chain break (trashed engine), new water pump, normal dings and dents . . .$1700

1) They aren't geared bad.

2) The transmissions are strong, but never really shift all that well

3) It's the transfer case that isn't the strongest thing in the world.

4) None of these things are a problem if you're "only" looking for 11 second quarter miles.

5) The prices for the two examples in this thread are HARDLY "normal."

"180 decibel blow off valve" Is that how they rate those post-FATF days?
