And here's the whole story and follow-up on what it was like to auction a car on Cars & Bids:

Update: I listed the Audi on Craigslist ($5 cost) on 1/12 for $9,990. It sold yesterday for $9,000 to the first guy that looked at (he saw it on the 14th and agreed to buy it and it took a couple of days to get the logistics together).

Simply put, it looks like Craigslist is back. FB marketplace gets you a lot of eyeballs, but I didn't feel like any of them were serious buyers. I got countless "$5k" messages like I'm just going to magically chop my price in half. I got three Craigslist contacts within 48 hours that were all serious buyers with the money to make it happen.

Unless you have a car that C&B has been knocking out of the park (Tesla, E39 M5), they aren't quite a mature enough platform yet.

I too have sold a car on CL by paying the $5. I thought it was well worth it as well.

Back in the day all my car sales were on CL. It kind of became a wasteland when dealers overran it, but now that autotrader is basically dead, FB marketplace is a joke, and eBay started charging two arms and a leg, I think a majority of the market went back to CL. It's easy to separate the noise from the real ads and that makes shopping for a car easy, so that's where the buyers are.

Honestly, who ever replies to the people offering your half your asking price?  I delete those replies immediately.  Someone must be otherwise it wouldn't be worth the effort to do it.

But did they offer $5k CASH like it made a difference?

And explain why they are doing you a favour by offering that much?

Fair enough. I got 7 accepted in BAT last 4 days, so next 90 days for me super busy there. My target is Americans with tax refunds, stimulus, and HELOC $, , as March-May is the best time to sell for me.

First will be the Impala. No one on GRM would buy it, but since you are in TX, its a very San Antonio appropriate ride. First car, I had to fight with BAT on the reserve, since they are TOO used to me selling cheeky everyting at no reserve there

I haven't sold a car in quite a while, but I can say my recent experience selling vintage BMX parts on eBay was almost fun. I'd had the parts since childhood, so I didn't really have any predetermined idea of what they should be worth.  $1 starting bid and no reserve.  All of the parts sold for far more than I imagined they would.

When I get the TDI running again, I may try the C&B site.  Could be fun and it's hard to say what an original-owner TDI wagon with well over 300K miles but with full maintenance records since new would be worth.

Send me links to your BAT auctions.

If I was to sell my XJR for what I bought it for, then I'd sell it on GRM. But, I'm going to try to get whatever market price is. Not sure there will be a ton potential buyers for it though.

Interesting. CL seems to be still very much on life support based on what I'm seeing around here. It's still a bloomin' nuisance to deal with FB marketplace, but outside the specialist forums or places like RacingJunk, it still seems to be the only player in town.

That's what it was like here all last year. There has been a noticable resurgence of cl users that basically mirrors the drop in fb users since fb started messing with the marketplace. (Maximum prices allowed on car listings based on book value, no older cars, dealers allowed to place ads, shipping available products clogging the feed, and the random shutting down of ads for nonsensical reasons like calling a car a digital product)

Let's hope the East Coast will eventually pick up on that hip new trend of trying to sell stuff on CL. As you said, between the berkeleyed up search function, the "price controls" and the futzing about when it comes to older and collector cars, FB marketplace is a bit of a disaster area.
