posted in my Formula 600 group for some reason, Subaru based flat 12 engine Porsche 917 clone. Kinda cool, pretty expensive

Holy crap. I was prepared to hate it, but watching the video then comparing the pics to a real 917/10... it's not bad. Pretty amazing, actually. I wonder if both the engines would be "simple" to get going together. Also, if it's a Subaru transmission, is it a manual or auto, and how likely is it to hold up to two flat-6s on track?

in the pictures it lists that it's a subaru 5 speed and if you listen to the video of him driving it around in the parking lot you can hear him feathering the clutch over the speed bump.

Regarding the "917", I'm highly skeptical when anyone talks of joining two engines together. The issue is harmonic resonances in the crankshaft and manufacturers spend big bucks ensuring it's not an issue. Taking a balancer off one engine and assuming the one remaining on the other will handle both is highly optimistic. Just the fact that it's so much further away likely indicates trouble in the future. Regarding the transaxle, yeah that's always the problem, finding one that can handle whatever's thrown at it. Proper ones are so expensive that it keeps most of us from building our mid-engine dream cars. Using a small one is death by a thousand cuts, whereas you know that you can't ever really get on it for fear of grenading the unit.

The ad states he used a subaru 5 speed, I'm wondering if that means a WRX 5 speed with the tailshaft blocked off similar to what the factory five 818 does?  If so I would think that is a time bomb waiting to blow with the torque of 1 6 cyl let alone 2.

One hell of a collection!

Kind of reminds me of scale models still in the box, sometimes still in the plastic frames.

Interesting, an odd amalgamation of parts assembled to look like a Bugatti Type 59. Appears to be powered by a M-B five cylinder Diesel. Beam axle with friction dampers. Lotsa rivets. 19 Steves is the ask.

That aluminum (I assume) "Porsche" body shell has serious potential (90% of the work to create a car is creating the shell.) One thing a fabricator told me once though: "teams/companies switched to composite body pieces because it's way faster to make them." True, simply getting rock dents in such a beautiful aluminum shell would suck.

This guy is selling the molds and has other parts for this VW-powered two-seater. Link to the ad: Tatum Crusader molds, on the Locost forum.

RichardSIA is also a GRMer who has been around here a while! Looks like he may have dipped out...not sure why, perhaps due to his frustrations regarding EVs.
