Sure, Moto GP is great and all, but what about racing mopeds instead? Perhaps not surprisingly, Japan's already done it. The video description doesn't offer much information on the specifics of the sport, but it looks to be at least semi-professional.

Have you ever raced anything like a moped? If so, what's your weapon of choice?

So back when I was racing a 125GP bike we used to go to an abandoned oval track to do some shakedown work and seat rings. We met some guys who raced scooters at Streets of Willow Springs. They once let me take a spin. The Lambretta I rode did 3rd wheelies and on top of that it was alarmingly darty...........this compared to my 125.

I always thought that Mopeds had pedals that were used to start and to help out on hills.

These things look more like scooters.

Google is telling me that in the U.S. mopeds are generally limited to 50 cc engine displacement and a 30 mph top speed, and they may be ridden without a motorcycle license.  They may be in either a scooter or motorcycle configuration, and pedal requirements vary from state to state.

LOL, indeed.

In any case, this sounds like true grassroots motorsports.

I actually owned a Honda P50 moped before Google existed.

In reply to Snowdoggie :

I have 2 tomos targa lx's they are pedal backwards as a kick start and can do 30-35mph on level ground. I could throw a kit and do 55-60 though, but at that point just getting a dual sport and a license would make more sense to me.

In  some places in Europe you could get a license at 14 years old  for a  Moped under 50cc ,

and that seemed to include Honda Minitrail 50  "Monkey bikes"  for the rich kids !
