One other factor if you drop collision is that if another vehicle causes an accident and damage to your car, you're at the mercy of the other insurance company. Sometimes that can take a long time to work out, and it's less hassle to go through your insurance, and have them battle the other insurance company. We were once rear-ended by a car that in turn was rear-ended, and that took forever to get sorted out.

Whut the guy above said. It's pretty common for the at-fault party to not exactly be expedient in responding to the insurer. Even if they are clearly at fault, the insurer is legally obligated to get their statement about what happened before rendering a decision on liability.  If the person decides to dodge them believing it will 'go away', they are wrong, but it's likely a month until they can find them at fault for non-cooperation. You'll be out a car the entire time, and don't let it sit in a storage lot while that happens because it's still your responsibility to mitigate the overall loss cost.
