[edit] No, looks like just the Forte gets the CVT, which was an all-new Kia-designed unit for this model (base trim gets the 6A). Apparently it's chain drive rather than belt.
Rio/Accent = fit sized. Narrow, compact good fuel economy but wide people rub shoulders without coats. seating for 4 decently, 5 in a pinch
Forte/Elantra - Civic/Corolla size. still smaller, but you only rub shoulders in the winter with bulky coats. 4 are roomy, 5 fits relatively well. upper 30's low 40's highway
Optima/Sonata = Camry/Accord size. technically mid-size, still good economy never rub shoulders, seating for 5 comfortably. newer cars are still upper 30's highway
also, Elantra went CVT for '20

Thanks, Bob. What's the skinny on the CVT? I'm leaning toward recommending the Optima (large format) or the Elantra (medium format), just to avoid that. But maybe that's not necessary.
It would be a shame if I steered him away from that because I think the Forte / Elantra is the best match for him, and I like the Kia styling better than the Hyundai.
Honestly I don't know. They're new. not many issues yet.
but.... they have a 10/100 powertrain warranty so I'd not be scared by it. They've been using the cvt in their hybrids for a few years and I can't say I've heard of any issues.

The Avis process is a little different than Hertz. For Avis, you find the car you want online and Avis will move it to the rental office near you. It is at that office that you can see the car. You can take it for a short drive or rent the car for 3 days to try. If you buy after 3 days they waive the rental fee. An interesting way to try out the exact unit for an extended time.
I've always fantasized about getting a lease, and returning bloodied and beaten up on its last legs yet undetected by the mechanic doing the inspection.
Wait a second, half the cylinders are down on compression. Look at this, all the bushings are shot and there's no oil left in the shock absorbers. This doesn't make sense, *plugs into diagnostics* it shows here he sat bouncing off the rev limiter each time he was stopped? Is that a nitrous port? Get the lease department down here, did we cut him his cheque back yet? Yes sir he's already left the lot. God dammit!
Not a lease, but you can get into an under 50k mile fusion titanium with literally all the bells and whistles for right under 20k right now. Seems to me a lot more car for the payments than The Kia options and it could still pick up family road trip duty from time to time if needed without worry about going over miles.

Thinking about these warranties got me thinking. For Kias/Hyundais that are Certified Pre Owned program from the Kia/Hyundai dealership the cars then get the full remaining 10yr/100k mile warranty. So, I searched for CPOs in your area.
'18 w/20k asking $11.5k This is then one year older that the Hertz '19 model with nearly the same miles. The 4 yr extension of warranty from 6yr to 10yr becomes a real bonus netting you 3 more years of warranty since the car is 1 year older. More warranty, less cost for the car seems like a win-win. No cvt in this '18 model.
Similar deal on '18 Optima asking $15.7k but not as compelling as the Forte above.

Dangit John you beat me to it. CPO's get the full coverage.
As for that Forte, that is the same drivetrain as the wife's Koup. we're at 90k miles on it with nothing but 9k mile oil change intervals, one set of brakes and 2 sets of tires. Oh and a set of spark plugs. We've had it now for 60k miles.

2018 / 2019 was a generational change, wasn't it?
Seems like the '19 is a nicer car.
Test drove 2019 Kia stinger. Dealership was not offering deals on it unless it was a 2020 still it was not a good deal anyway with a $3500 rebate (cash purchase). 2020 is over in 2.5 months. Talk about them trying to kick you in the teeth on not factoring depreciation in that short time before the year is over.
