I was about 8 or 9 when this came out. There was also a tv commercial where the son left the house in a new one and came back with it hot rodded. I was in heaven.
who remembers when your average young adult male could sit on the roof of a car without seriously risking a call to the paintless dent repair guy? I do, but only because I bought cars that were made before I was.
I started to drive in 1982 so though I do not remember the exact ad, what I do remember was the air shock (Gabriel Hi-jackers) "jacked up" look that was super popular.
I find it strange that this historic look is really no longer shown at your typical car show night these days.

Richard Dreyfuss caught hell for just leaning on one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbPdqoHGaoY

I'm starting to see it around here again on muscle cars. It's kind of like bringing back the gasser look, but not as cool. There's a guy that works at one of the local auto parts places that has a flat black, rusty late 60s Dart with hijackers, a general lee style push bar, aluminum fin rims, and a CB whip.
I remember those ads in all of the car magazines. I also remember working at a dealership in Langhorne, PA that sold Mopar, American Motors and Chevrolet. The shop I worked in had 60 bays and on any given day or night shift there were Road Runners, Chargers w/440 six packs, RTs, Super Bees, Hemi Cudas/Chargers/Dodges/Plymouths, Cuda AARs/Challenger RTs, Demon/Duster 340s(some w/superchargers), Rebel Machines, Javelins/AMXs, SC Ramblers….. We thought those days would never end. Ah, but they did. BTW, labor rate for cash repairs was $4.00 per hour and I worked flat rate with a guarantee of $125 per week.

That was a series of billboards that were put up around Detroit during the Woodward Dream Cruise in 2007.

the big difference was that it wasn't Richard's car ...

What's up with the highway signs? 75 doesn't intersect Woodward and 10 (or at least what is currently known as 10) only does a good 15-20 miles from where this looks to have been taken.
I figure this shot is taken near Square Lake Rd which is also known as I-75 Business Loop through Pontiac and the spur road that takes you to I-75.
I also figure that the GTO is executing a "Michigan Left"

My mom was in grade school when that ad was fresh. However I did have a book of muscle-era advertisements and that was one of my favorites.
That book was the reason I was all "OMG OMG OMG" when a customer dropped off a Rebel Machine for servicing. I got to drive a Rebel Machine. It was cool.
I don't know the actual location of the GTO ad but it was made from a real photograph of the car sitting in that Michigan left. There is a picture on the web somewhere of the location today, if I recall it's changed somewhat since 1968.
I've never seen that before but there's a guy around here who has a metallic brown AMX with a BDS blower sticking out of the hood like the one on the right. I'm guessing that he remembers it.
I remember the TV commercial very well. I was 11 years old. Son borrows Dad's new Javelin, returns with blower coming out of the hood, stripped interior (aluminum panels), etc. Made a big impression on me.

I used to see that car at cruises & shows from the valley up to Danbury all the time starting back in the 80's. One day I was running a couple of my cars at a track rental at Lebanon Valley and the AMX showed up. Everyone knew the car and was surprised he was actually gonna run it. Was in the street tire lane a couple cars in front of me. First launch he blew the rear all over, car barely moved, huge mess and delay. Felt bad for the guy because everyone was watching wondering what the car could do. Didn't see the car again for years and then I moved south. Have you seen it out recently?
