Seriously. I don't even really know what most people use it for, so I don't know what section to look it. Either way, I searched Rural King and Lowes top to bottom and couldn't find it. What's the deal?
PS - I was looking for it because I'm rebuilding an AC compressor, and an instructional video I watched said to use mineral oil to lubricate the o-rings and seals. I do not need food grade or anything fancy.
The pharmacy of your local grocery store will have small bottles of it for under $2. It is used as a laxative
You can also submerge your PC in it in order to keep it cool. Guys build aquarium PC's with that stuff. Wanna see? OK...

That would explain why I couldn't find it at Rural King or Lowes. I knew it had some medicinal purposes, but didn't really know that was it's primary use. Thanks!
You want to lube the compressor exclusively with whatever oil the system uses. If R134a you should most likely be using PAG oil in whatever viscosity is stated, available at any parts store. R134a is NOT compatible with mineral oil. If R12 you should be using mineral oil for AC systems, or ester oil, also available at any parts store.
I believe he meant just to oil the o-rings for installation, that should be fine.

Thanks, I need a project like that.
Come to think of it, you could do the same thing with distilled water. Can fish live in distilled water???
"Baby Oil" is mineral oil with some perfume in it. It's what I use on vinyl. Available at a Wally World near you, and cheaper than "mineral oil" because it's for external use only.
I don't think distilled water would work, Pete. While it does not conduct electricty, as soon as you dump something like a motherboard in it, you have polluted the pure water with dust, stuff dissolving from the motherboard, etc., and it's not pure H2O anymore. Pop. I also think that pure H2O would kill fish, and as soon as the fish pee, there goes your resistance as well.
Butcher block oil and I think oil people put on countertops is both mineral oil.

It is also used in the formulation of adhesives and plastics. I just had to prepare 3000lbs of it for disposal when my plant closed down two weeks ago.

This is what I use it for.
Usually near the varnish in the paint section of Home Depot. I had trouble find it too.

I actually ended up using some cutting board oil that I had in the kitchen (the label said somewhere "food grade mineral oil"), but I figured for future reference I should probably find out where to get regular mineral oil.
And, for the record, that aquarium computer is pretty bad ass.

Haha, yes it is!!!
Weird, I bought some at Home Depot for a project last year...... (??) I don't know why it wouldn't be at Lowes, also. Good Luck!
