Hey Guys, Just got my Moto Learner's Last week and looking to pick up a beginner's bike to learn on. The typical beginner bikes are ok, but I'd like something with a little more character, say the 81 Honda XL500:

Can anyone provide some insight on these? Had a similar honda in the past? Things to watch out for? Anywhere worth the asking price? My riding will probably be 85/15 pavement/dirt&gravel, need to cruise ~60mph to work.

Waddaya think?

great old bikes. Smoking engine would worry me, prob need a top end job. I'd try to steal it for $500-600.

Those are good bikes, but the price is high. They're heavy and hard to kick start. Slightly newer XL 250 / 350 (rare) or 600/650 with the Pro Link rear suspension would be a better choice. There are zillions of 600/650's out there.

You're thinking along the right line, but you can get a newer, better Honda for the same money.
