For being so highly ranked, a spiedie is pretty niche, I had to Google it because I'd never heard of it before, and my friends eat narwhal and auk.

No primantis? No pulled pork?

Some interesting choices no less, maybe some inspiration for summer cooking.

I don't even know half of these sandwiches so to me a lot are niche.

Apparently I don't eat many sandwiches

OK so bagel and lox counts as a sandwich so why no Halifax donair?

Hotdogs should count and I'd imagine North America consumes enough of those to make it #1. Nothing better than a weiner split and fried on a flat-top, then smothered in coleslaw.

Edit- No Dagwood?

Also, FWIW, I had a a bagel with lox this morning. Not a real New York bagel but still hit the spot.

You beat me to it.

I used to split the wieners, fry them in a pan, and serve them on toast with mustard. I called it a burnt weeny sandwich (after the album) and the kids loved them.

If we're counting burgers as sandwiches, then a Double-Double needs to be on that list.

I learned at a young age from my Italian grandmother: Italian bread, yellow mustard, sliced ham, provolone cheese and some lettuce.  Pretty much the same sandwich for lunch from 1987 - 2000.

Simplicity.

Reminds me of a francheesee. Split a hot dog, American cheese in the middle, wrap it in bacon. You're supposed to deep fry it at that point, but it works just fine in the oven as well.

First of all, where's the peanut butter sandwich here?  It should be near the top.

My thought exactly.  Its absence makes the list a mockery.  smiley

I diced up a can of chipotles in adobo sauce today.

You spread that on a toasted bun like you would mayo. Half a dozen thin slices of black forest ham, and top with a nice soft ripe avocado. I don't have a name for it but I had it for dinner and it was awesome like usual.

Duck it, challenge accepted.

I'm gonna start looking up recipes and ingredient lists. Whatever is these I can make at home without spending ridiculous money, I'm going to attempt to make.

For science.

Adding this to the conversation.

And thinking about this some more because, let’s be honest, this is one of the most important documents of our lifetimes

Bacon, egg & cheese: We used to get ham, egg and cheeses from the deli across the street from the bike shop I worked at. Happiness on a roll. Haven’t had a (good) one in years. I want to say the deli was named Phil’s. They offered a drive-thru–kinda like Dairy Barn–and we’d roll up on our BMX bikes.

Grilled cheese: My mom’s is the best. #sorrynotsorry

Italian sub: My go-to in many cases as it’s a safe bet and kinda hard to screw up.

Tuna melt: Another fave for home but usually not something I grab when out.

Fried chicken: Bojangles might be my current fave here if talking about fast food.

Cubano: A major favorite but not all are created equally in that some are just too greasy. La Terestita in Tampa is my gold standard: crisp bread, crisp veggies and served right away. Cafe Con Leche here in Ormond is my local fave but, sadly, is closed on Sunday when I usually have a craving for one.

Reuben: An underrated classic. Pump House, our local BBQ joint, makes a good one.

Gyro: Is it a sandwich? Who cares, it’s yummy. Worth driving to DeLand for one.

Egg salad: Best I’ve had, other than my mom and grandma’s, was from Mike’s in New York City. Dude cracked open two hard-boiled eggs and whipped them up on the spot. GOAT.

PB&J: A classic here at home although I sometimes sub in honey for jelly.

Torta: I’d love a good torta close to home. I’ve found a decent one in DeLand but had better in St. Cloud. (I forget the name of the place but it’s near a photo studio we have used.) Once had a killer one in Brooklyn but don’t ask me to remember the name.

Bagel with lox: Yes, please, and on an egg bagel.

Falafel: If not my wife’s, it needs to come from a halal cart and, ideally, at 2:00 in the morning. Extra hot sauce, please. Publix offers a falafel sub, but it can be a bit dry. Ordering one can also cause the works to grind to a halt until they find the one person there who’s made one before.

Chicken salad: My standard go-to when hitting a diner in New York. Some say Junior’s is overrated, but I say those people are wrong.

Veggie and hummus: Yum.

I've visited California enough times to know what that is, but my Canadian side insists that's a coffee :)

Also, the In-n-out burgers are better than average fast food burgers, but they're not objectively good hamburgers.

I am assuming that the bagel and lox on this list is on a proper Montreal style bagel and not one of those sad New York style ones.

This is the dumbest list I've seen in a long time, and it's creator should feel bad about themselves.  The number one American sandwich is chicken marinated in salad dressing that I've never seen outside of a place people pass through to get to Niagra Falls?  There are probably five better sandwiches in western New York let alone the US. There's no Parmigiana sandwich, either chicken or meatball, and yet somehow avacado  toast is there?  I don't know enough of the foreign sandwiches to comment but it's probably safe to assume many of them are nonsense answers as well. At least they got the bagel with lox right putting an American flag next to it instead of a Mapleleaf, though ideally it should have the blue and orange of NYC next to it.

Execution is more important than type.

You know this to be true.

I'm ignorant of the flag butifarra is listed next to, but I had a delicious though obviously track-food-quality butifarra at the Circuit de Barcelona Catalunya. It was really good, and a non-track version is probably awesome. But tasteatlas seems to list that elsewhere as a Peruvian sandwich (though that's not a complete Peruvian flag) with a garlicky ham, while the Catalan version is a sausage. So the names are regional before you even get into individual implementations...

Ah good, someone else noticed that too. A lot of these sandwiches are repeats with slight variations based on the region where they come from. Almost like the list maker was just trying to check off a bingo card instead of make a real list.

I'm still gonna try to make them, but, there's gonna be a lot less than 50 after eliminating duplicates.

That list is dumb, but there are some great sandwiches on it.

Put me into the "Bahn Mi and Torta are the greatest" team, but all well made sandwiches can be divine.

I think this is an excellent time to make sure any "sandwich curious" folks are watching Barry over at Sandwiches of history

Charming dude, sub 3 minute videos, interesting and sometimes terrible ideas from vintage cookbooks. International Sandwich Sunday is usually the winner of the week.

Based on the global and slightly confusing nature of the list, I figured it was not curated but compiled. And that seems to be the case - tasteatlas.com is a site that seems to catalog various food types, and on each listing is a reader rating. Sort by ratings and voila, there's your list.

If you want to know what all these various things are, just go to https://www.tasteatlas.com/sandwiches and click "best rated".
