Funny that is how my grandpa had his old anvil mounted, though the setup is gone now (someone talked him out of it at some point). I do still have his old bench grinder that is mounted up in a similar fashion.

To do some forging you better have strong shoulders and arms. My shoulders are gone. But I do want to do a bit of backyard smelting.

If you don't have the strong arms and shoulders when you start, you soon will. But it is fun, and making steel do what you want it too is cool. I love the look and smell of hot metal. Good hammers, a decent anvil, heat, and goodness ensues. You will be AMAZED at what you can make, from basic to elaborate. Angelfire will give you a lot of help.
