Portland is amazing, small town vibe in a larger city.

You have to go to Geddys if you have not been there!!!

Bring lots of warm clothes. Three years ago, they got so much snow, the houses were buried under drifts. Southern CT, RI, and SE Mass are the only parts of New England that don't get snow cover from late November thru March.

I live in central Maine, an hour north of Portland, and say go for it. Portland is on the coast and does not get as much snow as the inland sections of the state. From November to April it gets about 70" on average. The citys are equipped to handle the snow and it is only a hassle with a big or icy storm.

Portland is the cultural center for the state with all the activites that come with it, but on a smaller scale. It has a minor leage baseball, basketball, and hockey teams, symphany, etc. I have never thought it was dirty, but I remember when it was much more depressed than it is now.

Josh, who posts on this site is a landlord about 15 miles from the city center and could give you better info on rents, etc.

Jtspell S, Geddys is in Bar Harbor, more than three hours from Portland, did you mean Grittys? Who has brewpubs in Portland, Auburn and Freeport?

Portland is about 2 hours from Boston if you want to go to a bigger city for other events. Its also about 2 hour from NHMS if you want to do track days or attend a NASCAR event. I don't think the Indy cars are returning for 2012. There is an autocross club that does most of its events within 45 min. of the city.

Most people I know live outside of the city, because it cost less and comute in. The public transportation is great for Maine, but poor compared to many other cities, it just does not have the population base to support it.

If you have a job lined up, visit and make up your mind. The tourist season is over and retail is now geared for Christmas, and has different vibe. Maine has many different flavors depending where you are. I had a tech come up to do work from rural Tennessee and would move to Maine in a minute if he could talk his wife into it. I have also worked with people whe could not wait to leave. My wife left after high school and came back 12 years later.

I am happy to answer, hopefully unbiased, questions you have, but you will have to make up your own mind.

Allagash Brewing!

Other than that, I wasn't impressed, except for the seafood. Driving in Portland has to be worse than any other city that isn't Milan or Moscow. I had to go backwards on one way streets (they were empty, and short, don't worry) more than once because it was impossible not to. I'm sure the street layout was designed by a chimp drunk off his ass on cheap bourbon.

Guibo,

I am an ME E.I.T. trying to get there. My wife's idea and the more we research it we like it.

I am also from rural Tennessee!

Know of anyone I can solicit a resume to? PM me.

Thanks!
