It wouldn't have been as good. Once Bernie grabbed hold of the TV Rights (which he offered to the team owners who all decided to the spend the $10,000 buy in on next year's season) F1 became a real thing that you could watch.
What should have happened was that Bernie, et all should have stepped down long ago once it was established as a brand and let it be managed by the teams/drivers, but greed has a way of corrupting (even those that are already pretty corrupt).
So the fact that you can watch it on TV (or any automotive race on TV) can really be traced back to Bernie and his efforts.
Everything that happened after that is another matter altogether.
